you didn't tell me that it was on a KVM and you were switching back and forth...
While in a perfect world that shouldn't make a difference, it has been my experience that KVM switches are never perfect, and the _FIRST_ thing one should do when troubleshooting something strange is to reduce the variables as much as possible, i.e. in this case: get the KVM out of the loop...

Actually, I did try taking out the KVM switch. It didn't make the slightest bit of difference. When Windows actually started going, I plugged it back in, and it's been fine ever since.
