On what basis have you decided that our captors do not reside here? They may very well be in some unseen level of the tower, or living among us disguised as fellow captives.
I agree that this seems less like a hostage situation and more like an experiment. To what purpose, it is difficult to say yet. However...
Perhaps we should be conducting surveys of the population to further determine our commonalities? Some universes, though slightly varied, appear to be connected, and others are wildly different. We might determine the pattern that was used to select us, which may lead us to the ultimate purpose of this place.

I do not imagine it had anything to do with our normal tablets that the residents carry around.
These tablets on the media level, are they different from the ones that the residents carry around? I have not been there myself.
Also, I am well aware that logic is applicable in multiple fields.
