Keyboard goes "bzzt!"

Jan 26, 2008 00:35

Had a lovely lunch today with marenfic, which involved Mexican food, much laughter and gossip, and half a venti dulce de leche tea being spilled on my laptop. Oops. We cleaned it up, but when I got home tonight I discovered that the keyboard appears to be fried -- most of the keys don't work, and typing results in gibberish. Also, the bottom right corner ( Read more... )

I'm going to have your entire enormous flist hating me for taking you away from them by making it harder for you to be online :)

I will check with my home owner's insurance tomorrow though I think it will probably be cheaper for me in the long run to just give you cash. I have absolutely no advice for the pre-existing hardware issues except to say that I'll pay for those too if need be.

You're awesome though, and I had a great time seeing you again.

When I got home I watched Chuck and Unfinished Business to cheer me up. It totally worked, I have to say.

Hardly! I'm too addicted to stay away for long, even though this keyboard is a bitch. (At least the laptop still works perfectly in every other way -- I just can't type. Or listen to music, but then I couldn't do that before.)

Accidents happen. Hell, I might've done the same thing sooner or later. If anything, *I* feel rather guilty about the potential expense and hope the repairs are cheap if they're not covered by warranty. I appreciate that you're being so sweet about this!

And we're still on for premiere weekend in the ATL, right? *fingers crossed*

I have spilled things on my laptop keyboard before, and the laptop keys were only screwed up for a couple days. I'd suggest just letting the keyboard dry out for a few days, and then try using it again - it may go back to normal by itself.

I'm trying to give it time and be patient, but it only seems to be getting worse. *sigh*

I forget exactly how long it took for my keys to dry out. I've definitely spilled contact lens solution on my keys before (and possibly tea, too, on a different occasion) and the keys produced complete gibberish at first. I do remember being convinced that my laptop was gone for good, and then it essentially fixed itself, though, so there is still hope. :) Good luck!

Oh, God. You have a Toshiba?

Good luck with that, darling! :/

Sorry, I really have nothing constructive to say here, except that I hope you can get it repaired for a reasonable price!

Thanks for the optimism. ;) I'm hoping the extended warranty will take care of everything, though I doubt it. Like I said above, my big concern is that Circuit City will try to claim that the busted DVD-R and sound card were caused by the spill, even though those were pre-existing conditions.

That site has some great advice -- though it won't work in this case because I didn't get home until five hours after the spill happened... at a Starbucks, where we couldn't really do much damage control beyond mopping up with paper towels. Hopefully, though, I can find a way to get it fixed!

Hmm. That makes me feel a bit better! I suspect, though, that the motherboard is somehow damaged. The keys aren't at all sticky, but nothing happens when I press on any of them. Still, if the computer store doesn't fix it, I'll see if I can find a solution like yours. Thanks for the tip!
