Keyboard goes "bzzt!"

Had a lovely lunch today with marenfic, which involved Mexican food, much laughter and gossip, and half a venti dulce de leche tea being spilled on my laptop. Oops. We cleaned it up, but when I got home tonight I discovered that the keyboard appears to be fried -- most of the keys don't work, and typing results in gibberish. Also, the bottom right corner of the screen is a bit screwy. Most everything else seems fine, but the keyboard is rather important. (Right now I'm on my old desktop computer.) So, I need some advice, please!

When I got the Toshiba 18 months ago, I bought Circuit City's extended warranty -- yeah, I know people say they're unnecessary, but I'm paranoid like that. For a while I'd been procrastinating on getting the busted sound card and DVD-R drive fixed; both should be covered under warranty, as they're hardware issues. Here's the problem, though: the busted keyboard (motherboard?) is most definitely not going to be covered under warranty. I'm concerned that if I do take it in, they'll try to claim that the sound card and optical drive were also ruined by the spilled tea, even though those were pre-existing issues. How should I handle that when I call the 800-number?

Also, M. offered to pay for repairs, but wouldn't my renter's insurance pay for replacement if the computer can't be salvaged or if the repairs are expensive? I've never filed an insurance claim before, so I have absolutely no idea how it works. My deductible is $500, so a claim is probably pointless. But, again, I'm clueless here. Any suggestions for handling this whole mess would be dearly appreciated! I might be scarce for a while, though, since this desktop computer is a pain in the ass. ;)
