Everyone has been buzzing about this, so... From the horse's mouth. I SOOOOO don't know how I feel about this. Seeing George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire could be the most amazing thing ever. Or NOT. Heh. The proof will come with the execution, of course, and I will do my level best to not pre-judge this thing before it even gets off the ( Read more... )

I hadn't heard anything about ASoIaF (or whatever the appropriate nickname is) being turned into a series. That could be...interesting. I'm pretty wary of something that complicated (and that gruesome) being made into a movie/TV show, but the fact that it's going to be a series instead of a movie, and that it's going to be on HBO, which doesn't seem to have a problem with disturbing images, is promising. I'm curious to see what they do with it.

And as for Brokeback Mountain, I don't quite understand how you could see that scene as rape. I mean, it wasn't sweet, loving sex by any stretch, but there was nothing to indicate that it wasn't consensual. Interesting.

And yay for Yamapi pictures. :-)

I'm curious to see how an HBO tv series of ASOIAF would turn out, too! As ina says below, this is really the best possible scenario for any filmed version of the series. It's just that I love it so very much (I have mad, crazy love for the it) that if it's done badly, I'm sure I shall be scarred. ;)

I was so shocked by her take on that sex scene. We ended the conversation agreeing to disagree because she just didn't see it the same way. I understand if rough(ish) sex isn't to your taste or that you'd rather not see it in a film, but to think that it's rape was just very startling...and disappointing.

We can all use a little Pi in our day...:)

I know, right? That pic of Koyama and Pi with the shaggy dog is *love.* Here is Pi alone with the dog. :)

Probably either Reibekuchen or (Kartoffel)puffer, depending on the region C is from. ;)
I think this is the absolute best option for filming A Song of Ice and Fire. A movie would be to short and HBO probably means they won't shy away too much from the violence and sex. And GRRM knows how television works, that should give us some assurance as well. And if it's bad, we can ignore it.

Nice pic spam! But is the second picture really Pi?! With that much eye liner?

YES, I think he mentioned both of the names, but definitely the second when he told me what the potato pancake was called. SO YUMMY.

I agree with you, that this definitely sounds like the best way to do it, if it's going to be done at all. I remember a lot of scoffing over Lord of the Rings (in the years before the films came out) and the trilogy exceeded most people's expectations, so who knows? This could be done similarly well.

You know, I have no idea if that is really Pi or not. I can only say that it was posted as such. I thought the pic and the eyeliner was hilarious. Here is another pic (apparently) from the same photoshoot.

I'm not sure what I feel about the Asoiaf series. It could of course turn out great, as LOTR did, but then again it could not.

I guess my biggest fear is tied up with the fact that the series isn't finished yet. LOTR was after all a complete work with a large base of related items to start from (like artwork, essays, a huge fan culture and so forth). Asoiaf is in those terms rather new. And whereas the LOTR could in no way be influenced by the films, the Asoiaf are not in the same safe zone. So I worry, and I grumble.

But if it turns out to be good? Oh yes - I will be a giggling fangirl. ;)

You raise a very, very good point: ASOIAF is not finished yet, and how will this affect the completion of the series, if in no other way than the fact that the writer will be involved with the series at some level and that this may be distracting for completion and/or affect even the plotting of the story? Yes, that is indeed the biggest thing to give pause with this scenario. I don't blame you for worry at all.

But if it turns out to be good? Oh yes - I will be a giggling fangirl. ;)

Me, too! :)

My biggest worry is actually that Martin will get distracted - and then spend years finishing the series. *whimper*

Then there is the dread of my beloved Asoiaf turning into something really cheesy. But I've decided not to spend so much time worrying in advance. (no to see f I can hold myself to that promise. ;P)

She was disturbed that the film depicted a "rape" scene. Yes, she thought that the first sexual encounter was a rape

I must say I could have done without that scene absolutely fine for the rest of my life (sorry, this is just me), but though tortured and violent that sex was it was not a rape. There were many elements of the fight there, something I guess can happen easier with gay sex. (because obviously both partners are of the same strength and it is not the same as when a man is hitting a woman).

And EEEEEEEE! Thank you so much for the Yamapi pictures!!!! I particular like the large one where he is in some furry thing.

I had no problem with that sex scene, as I've seen "worse" in other films, and I thought it was incredibly passionate - and tortured, as you say. I thought it was an eloquent way of demonstrating their fierce yet conflicted attraction to each other, and of the kind of relationship that can evolve between two men, particularly of their culture.

I'm glad you like the pics! I adore Yamapi in fur. Actually, I adore most of these boys in fur.
