'A Song of Ice & Fire,' 'Brokeback Mountain,' and Yamashita Tomohisa picspam
Everyone has been buzzing about this, so... From the horse's mouth. I SOOOOO don't know how I feel about this. Seeing George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire could be the most amazing thing ever. Or NOT. Heh. The proof will come with the execution, of course, and I will do my level best to not pre-judge this thing before it even gets off the ground. :)
Sunday night, N and I had dinner with friends that was focused around a wonderful German potato pancake. C told me the name of it, but I've already forgotten. It was so yummy that now I want to make them myself! After dinner, we all talked for a long time, hours. The topic somehow wandered to Brokeback Mountain. One of the girls at the table said something that shocked me and L who both like the movie quite a bit. She was disturbed that the film depicted a "rape" scene. Yes, she thought that the first sexual encounter was a rape. L and I were horrified and L very vociferously protested, pointing out that Jake Gyllenhaal's character had instigated the encounter, and in the end, he was on the bottom, so it could hardly be rape, right? Sure, it was rough, but that didn't surprise me at all, this girl was really taken aback by it and considered it rape. Hmmm. If you've seen it, what do you think? I tried to point out that consent is what divides rough sex from rape and there was clearly consent, but she didn't seem to get that. And yes, she did know that it was a gay love story going into the film, so it's not that she was blindsided by the subject matter. I'm still shocked and saddened that anyone could think that scene depicted rape...and anahab cracked us all up when (in a tense moment in the discussion) she finally said "Well! That was my favorite scene in the whole movie!" - and then left to use the bathroom. We died laughing.
Perhaps it's because I've been reading Nobuta wo Produce fic lately, but I felt like a Yamapi picspam today. So...
