The first time I watched the episode where they're playing basketball ("Safe," maybe?), I had a bit of an "OMG RTD stole that scene!" freakout. Doesn't Kaylee even wind up scoring from on top of someone shoulders? Some of the shots were almost creepily identical.

I definitely wouldn't be surprised that RTD had watched some Firefly and borrowed from it, intentionally or otherwise. And Mal and Jack are indeed very, very similar. I could definitely see Jack doing what Mal does in "War Stories," when he's trying so hard to keep Wash from breaking under torture. Actually, the whole Zoe/Wash/Mal angle in that episode is very similar to the Gwen/Rhys/Jack dynamic (although if Rhys were to tell Jack and Gwen that they had to sleep together, I imagine they'd be a lot less awkward about it than Mal and Zoe were.)

"Vera" was confirmed as a Firefly reference, but I forget by whom.

Gwen is only like Zoe in the ways you noted. After that, Zoe outdoes her by leaps and bounds in competence and grit. Compare the ep when Niska captures Mal and Wash to "Meat" or "End of Days." Zoe kicks ass, is steely and logical, basically saves the day (much more like Ianto). Gwen emotes a lot and leaves it mostly to Jack by being first to surrender and/or going along with the mutiny. Zoe would've shot Owen before she
mutinied!

I think someone from Firefly wrote a Torchwood episode? Maybe ... Or was it Doctor Who? Anyway. Yeah. The similarities are very poignant. Firefly is the better show, but TW was campy, silly and had a male/male relationship. Good times!

Agreed. Whilst I recognise that Firefly is the superior much better written show, it hasn't ever given me the warm fuzzies like TW does!

I've just bought the Firefly series and film just before Christmas and haven't had time to watch them yet, but shall do so with glee. Not just for Adam Baldwin, but to see what else RTD has borrowed from it like he has from many other shows.

Oh, you're going to enjoy Firefly!
There are lots of little things RTD has borrowed, and some cases copied (watch out for the basket ball game - freakishly similar to the beginning of Cyberwoman).
