So in the process of this whole (stupid) story we learn that Mr. Whisper was also Mr. Winchester, who was the headmaster of Bruce's elementary school, where he found and killed at least one student. And Bruce was lined up to be his next, his "number 8."

So Batman runs off to Austria and discovers that Mr. Whisper was originally a monk who sold his soul to the devil to survive the Black Plague.
