White Collar Big Bang - Round 5 - Now with 100% More Ramp Up

Mar 25, 2014 13:54

The White Collar Big Bang has a fairly long challenge period - April to September - six months if my math is correct. Previous rounds have operated well under a regime of benevolent neglect. The mods popped in on occasion to let writers know when things were due, but basically left people alone in their creative endeavors ( Read more... )

mod: ramp-up, mod post, round five

Hi there!

I don't have much experience with talking business with fellow writers (I'm kind of shy about my writing process I guess), though as I might join the BB as a writer this year (in addition to artist), may I make a suggestion?
If you plan on specific meeting times in chatroom or whatever could it be compatible with both sides of the Atlantic? Or alternatively, make some meetings possible for us, and others for you?

I know you girls chat regularly, but at times impossible for me to join... :-/

Excellent, excellent idea!

We do have a lot of European participants and I will definitely take them into consideration when scheduling an on-line session.

That's a really good point. I mean, I tend to not really participate in the typical venting/cafe meeting/discussion posts (I whine my poor beta's ear off, and that's it *g*) but if there is an interesting topic to be discussed, I'd love to be able to join without having to pull an all-nighter.

Us Europeans are important, too! *strikes pose*

(Also? I think it's awesome that you want to write this year as well! :D)

Thanks! No promises I'll make it, but I'll do my best. All I need is an idea!

(unless there are copyright or ownership issues - remember, one of your mods IS a lawyer).

SPOILSPORT! (said the intellectual property specialist...)

I think that using a separate comm for cafes/rants would be much better, to cut down on spam from the official comm. I also don't think that this purpose should be wholly served by the chatroom -- plenty of people prefer to browse/answer comments in their own time, rather than go through the fuss of IRC, and also as people have pointed out, it's hard to imagine the chat wouldn't mostly benefit US people. (As this is a relatively tiny BB, it seems good not to exclude people even accidentally.)

The wcbbvent community is still live, but it doesn't really have a lot of traction or members - and the prior mods used to signal boost it every round. So, if you'd like to use it, it's there for you.

I am not sure if having a café post once a week is spamming the community, it's providing a service to members. By way of comparison, there are 40 members of the vent community and over 400 members of the big bang community. I do think that making the Big Bang comm more visible is to the benefit of the community.

As for scheduled chats, it's been pointed out that we need to have chat times more conducive to non-US participants. Would you be interested in leading those discussions?

I've decided not to sign up, but good luck.

I already have a decent number of long fic projects going, and no guarantee of when they'll be done, so I probably won't sign up :/ If one of my WIPs begins to show sings of a definite end in sight, though, I might just.

FWIW, both the venting comm and the Cafe sound great! I especially like the Cafe idea.

Agreed with aragarna on the chat. I'm not in Europe, but it'd be significantly easier for me to join the chat with Europe timings than with US timings.

I've never written meta before, I could try, maybe, if I don't sign up :D

You should sign up! If just to give you the impetus to finish a project.

We're definitely going to be more considerate of our non-US members and schedule chat times more amenable to people in Europe and India. What is the time difference for you?

I'll definitely think about it! All depends on the state of the WIP at the time :)

I'm in India, so the official time zone is GMT +5:30.

That means 9 p.m. for me is somewhere between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Europe and somewhere between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the US. (according to the sites I just visited, at least.)

Okay - that's doable. If we set up chats for mid-morning (US-Eastern) Saturdays or Sundays, you would be able to join in?

OMG, I'm so ignorant. I don't know what a meta is, or a cafe? Other than a place you go for food. I'm thinking about doing the BB this year, but honestly have no opinions on chats, etc.

Cool! So excited to have you join.

A "café" is a post where people can have a discussion or vent about their writing or just chat about stuff the are having issues with.

A "meta" is an essay about something, whether it's an aspect of the show, like "why Neal's 2-mile radius is ridiculous" or "how to write original characters" or stuff like that.

No need to participate in a café or sign up to write a meta unless it's something you really want to do. All of this is ancillary to writing a good Big Bang story!
