Lord of the Rings Music?

What would you call Pippin's song, exactly? At first I thought it was Celtic music, but I've been looking for more music like it and I can't really find anything in that particular vein.

Same goes for the dwarves' song from the trailer for The Hobbit, what kind of music is it? (And more importantly, where can I find more like it ( Read more... )

Pippin's song is indeed very Celtic sounding, but it is known that the Hobbits in the movies were based on certain regions of England. Pippin's family, the Tooks, were Scottish-based (which is very appropriate, since Billy Boyd is from Scotland. Billy is wearing a Scottish family Tartan at various points in the movies, especially during the Grey Havens scene.). You will be hard pressed to find music just exactly like Pippin's song, since the tune was written for the movie and the words were part of a poem from the books. You may want to check out John McDermott if you like music of this type.

The Dwarven song sounds like it has a classical music feel (see "Carmina Burana", by Carl Orff), although the musical theme for it was written by Howard Shore.

I actually blogged about this on tumblr, and here's the answer I got in response to the song from the "The Hobbit" trailer.

"Aside from the obvious “Lord of the Rings” soundtracks, I might suggest that you go back in time and look at Any Gregorian Chant Ever, but especially the ones pre-Renaissance ones recorded in cathedrals.
For more complicated, more recent stuff, check out Eric Whitacre’s stuff as well, though I hear it’s harder on people who aren’t used to polyharmonic or polyrhythmic stuff and might take a while to get used to."

I hope that helps. ^_^
