could it have been Beginner's Greek by James Collins? the story description doesn't fit but the cover description does. I bought it after hearing a review and I enjoyed it a lot. :)

no, it wasn't this book. the figures were smaller, less detailed, more cutesie

Was it Abelard and Eloise? They're pretty famous. I'm sure there are billions of editions of their letters.

Also perhaps Griffin and Sabine?
