you mentioned you got the cooker in mind of having chicken breasts and potatoes and I did something similar today!

I cut up two carrots, two potatoes, a small amount of chopped cabbage and peeled and chopped a turnip and put it in the bottom of the slow cooker. You wouldn't have to do so much variety, it could be five potatoes or 3 and a couple of carrots.

then I put a big chicken breast on top, you could do 3 or 4, with italian seasoning, black pepper, salt, 2 cups of water, a bullion cube, pepper, salt, splash of what wine if you have it.

I put it on high for 3.5 to 4 hours. Could do low for 8. I mix some warm water w flour and mix it in to thicken at the end as well but you don't have to, just makes the liquid more like gravy

I make chili a lot. It is easy and a great way to use beans. I usually put kidney and black beans it in for added fiber. I also do pulled pork (pork shoulder and McCormick seasoning mix). It takes a handful of inexpensive ingredients to make the seasoning. I do veggie soup with veggie bullion or broth, water and either canned or fresh veggies and some tomato sauce for color and flavor.

We do LOTS of meals in the crock. Pork roast, with or without root veggies (Toss it in, elevating it from the bottom with aluminum foil, cook on low for 6-8 hours); whole chicken - again, raised on foil; beans -- any dried bean, pinto, white, great northern -- and if you have a ham bone put the bone in, then the beans (we never soak ours and they come out fine) and cover with water. Cook on low for hours. Then you can actually use recipes... ;-)

We do a whole chicken...

Cook it on a bed of celery and carrot and garlic and fill the slow cooker to half with water.

You can use the chicken to eat and the water and veg to make chicken noodle soup, just save the liquid and veg ina seperate pot, just boil the carcas once the meat has been eaten (save a chicken breast if poss to add) and then cook all the liquids and veg with soup noodles.
