You could always brush it after to combine the colors using a pet slicker brush. Like in my poof pattern: http://www.suncatchereyes.net/Poof%20Pattern.html

I agree with the brushing suggestion from chezmichelle. Here is a kiwi I made with black and brown yarn held together and then brushed. It is just crap acrylic yarn, but it brushed up reasonably well into something that looked pretty realistic for fuzzy kiwi feathers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25428243@N06/3640448092/in/set-72157604416163912/ (I don't remember posting this guy to the comm, but my memory has been swiss cheesy lately - I know he's on Ravelry though).

I have a kitty pattern where I crocheted strips of another color for the stripey look

If it's a tabby cat you're trying to suggest, folks usually just do stripes. It's pretty impossible to get all the swirls and whirls, but the stripes give the idea. I've seen quite a few, but darned if I can find them at the moment. :o/ You can also try a variegated yarn. You can be very creative, if you get the colors that are in the cat in question, it should look fine! :o ( ... )

I crocheted the stripes for my Kitty view here: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25421158

I would work the Kitten in a lighter color (light grey) then crochet the stripes in a darker grey. Good luck!
