If it's a tabby cat you're trying to suggest, folks usually just do stripes. It's pretty impossible to get all the swirls and whirls, but the stripes give the idea. I've seen quite a few, but darned if I can find them at the moment. :o/ You can also try a variegated yarn. You can be very creative, if you get the colors that are in the cat in question, it should look fine! :o)
