Wine Trip Partial Update

Aug 08, 2005 15:46

Went on the Winery trip on Saturday, and managed to taste 18 different wines at the places we stopped. First one was Tyrus Evans (7 wines tasted) which is located in an old train station in Carlton. Next we jaunted on to Cuneo and tried 5 wines there. Next door to there was the Carlton Winemaker's Studio and we only tried the free chardonnay ( Read more... )

That. Sounds. Heavenly.

Maybe we can get the Portland Contingent together some weekend to do this. How did you get around? I'd think one would be too drunk to drive.

I did one-day bus tour with some friends once. I didn't get drunk, but the combo of wine I did drink, busride and winding roads added up to one sick Crankycatlady. I'm not sure what to do in the future. I'd like to be free to taste and not worry about driving or barfing.

Bringing up my icon just reminded me of that AbFab episode where they go wine tasting in France. "This is the one we did not want. Yes, that one... the empty one."

Just taste and then spit. It feels inelegant, but it's the way the serious tasters do it - otherwise you end up too smashed to know what you're doing!

(I love love love that AbFab episode. I really need to buy the DVDs)

wellah, I'm looking forward to your notes. I'd really love to hear which ones you thought were good enough to bring home.

I do have to say that at one particular winery everything tasted acidic, so that might have been a factor of too much tannins and sulfites combined, or that their wines just sucked. We didn't do a lot of palate cleansing in between, but did have some water.

I'll try to gather all my stuff together tonight and take a crack at it.

It could be the local soil as well. We have a couple of wine regions near here that are known for the acidity of their wines. Some people love it, personally I prefer less acidic wines.

did you come across any organic wines/wineries?

Yes, Amity Vinyards has organic and eco-wines, as well as sulfite free wines, but we didn't manage to make it there on this particular trip. I think some of the wineries at the Carlton Winemaker's Studio might have organic wines as well.

That sounds like fun. I love wines. I went on a winery tour in Germany. That was a wonderful weekend out.

I thought of you last night, as I watched a show called "I'm My Own Twin" on Discovery last night. It was about two cases of chimeras. Very interesting, but they could have packed a lot more information into the show... it was mostly about this woman almost getting her kids taken away due to the fact that her blood dna test didn't match her own kids.

I listened to it while sorting my cosmetic bags for my trip. Quite interesting. I have none of the mosaic skin markings- but I have some interesting differences with my reproductive system because my 'twin' was male. That was why my surgeon diagnosed me with 'gynecomastica' when he reduced my breasts- I had 'boy boobs'.

What was also very interesting was the questions it brings up regarding DNA matching at crime scenes etcetera, as with chimerism, skin and hair and blood and whatever else could have two different genetic profiles coming from the same person. Makes you wonder how many are out there, and if folks are either wrongly accused or "getting away with it".
