Wine Trip Partial Update

Aug 08, 2005 15:46

Went on the Winery trip on Saturday, and managed to taste 18 different wines at the places we stopped. First one was Tyrus Evans (7 wines tasted) which is located in an old train station in Carlton. Next we jaunted on to Cuneo and tried 5 wines there. Next door to there was the Carlton Winemaker's Studio and we only tried the free chardonnay ( Read more... )

That. Sounds. Heavenly.

Maybe we can get the Portland Contingent together some weekend to do this. How did you get around? I'd think one would be too drunk to drive.

I did one-day bus tour with some friends once. I didn't get drunk, but the combo of wine I did drink, busride and winding roads added up to one sick Crankycatlady. I'm not sure what to do in the future. I'd like to be free to taste and not worry about driving or barfing.

Bringing up my icon just reminded me of that AbFab episode where they go wine tasting in France. "This is the one we did not want. Yes, that one... the empty one."

Just taste and then spit. It feels inelegant, but it's the way the serious tasters do it - otherwise you end up too smashed to know what you're doing!

(I love love love that AbFab episode. I really need to buy the DVDs)

wellah, I'm looking forward to your notes. I'd really love to hear which ones you thought were good enough to bring home.

I do have to say that at one particular winery everything tasted acidic, so that might have been a factor of too much tannins and sulfites combined, or that their wines just sucked. We didn't do a lot of palate cleansing in between, but did have some water.

I'll try to gather all my stuff together tonight and take a crack at it.

It could be the local soil as well. We have a couple of wine regions near here that are known for the acidity of their wines. Some people love it, personally I prefer less acidic wines.

So are you going to tell us which one was the sucky one?

Cuneo... aside from the first one we tasted there which was a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, all of their italian blends, the Bricco, the Nebbiolo, and the bordeaux style were all totally acidic.

Well my Dad was the chauffeur, and my Mom didn't drink to much either. While we were out there though we ran into two separate bachelorette parties in limos, and there are all kinds of van tours available out there too. Several years ago, my Aunt and all her old school friends found one that was an antique limo with multiple doors down both sides and bench seating that they booked for a trip around.

There are a ton of other wineries I'd love to visit that I haven't yet, especially down near Amity/Salem and the Forest Grove area. We can start doing research and figure out which might be the best way to go... I'm sure there is some info to get us started in the brochures I brought back!
