Reverse engineering - Twins' Ski Cap

Aug 12, 2006 03:41

I'm in the mood for a reverse engineering project. I thought I'd bring up the perennial favorite and get some movement on it.

In way of beginning, I present to you all the obligatory ( screencaps )

reverse engineering, hat, knitting, character, reference pictures

Oh, and I forgot to mention: the wavy line is clearly upside down, not that any of you couldn't notice that for yourselves. =D For some reason, it was easier for me to work on that way.

The real question is--do you think the diamond motif is upside down or right side up? =P

As it appears to me, the repeats of the wavy motif aren't perfectly centered over the diamond motifs, either. There's got to be at least a 1-st shift.

Ah, you are correct. I wasn't thinking about gauge, my bad. (Am also sleep deprived--stayed out late for a concert, went to bed around 12:30, and woke up at about 6:30 for church and work. Six hours is the dividing line between functional and fuzzy for me.)

Lovely, lovely. I know I have cream yarn and I'm sure there's blue somewhere--after all, I made a Ravenclaw scarf and I'm not going to use *all* the leftovers for my house unity scarf. =D I'm pretty excited that our charts seem to match. Good luck on your swatch and it seems we have made some definite progress indeed!

I have a long lasting love affair with that hat, involving much pining and wishing I could knit more than a scarf.

Good luck, and let us know how it comes along!

This hat? This hat will be a good gateway for folks who've worked scarves in the round and want to move on to a bit of shaping. Almost none of the colorwork is done by knitting it in. Only the big blue stripe is knit in, everything else is embroidered on afterwards with duplicate stitch. So, if you're up for some decreasing, duplicate stitch, and working on either dpns or one of the circular needle methods for small circumferences, you can make this hat. I've even got a cheat for folks who don't like purling!

Of course, I've ripped out the crown 7 times now in order to get the shape to work with the necessary number of stitches, and once because I missed something in the pics which I had to account for, but that's not a problem anyone else will have once the pattern is done.

Oooh. Then perhaps when there's a pattern I might give it a go :D

Thank you.
