So, I dug back through screencaps of GoF looking for inspiration since I'm tossing around the idea of doing a hat display, and I realized that I had some better caps of that dark hat Ron wears in PoA

I think there's definitely some lighter green on dark green (er, the light color on the dark color, I may be seeing wird colors) fair isle. the ear flaps look to me like they might have a fair isle pattern thats got a stripe of light on the top and bottom of it with the pattern in the middle. then its dark color for a while going up, until you hit two new patterns. cant tell what the lower one is, the upper one looks me me like snowflakes or, Ive made ALL of this up, and would say some very interesting stuff in rorshach tests.
To me, the earflaps look like they've got a trapezoidal lozenge of the dark color on the light, with a triangle-ish shape of dark on light at the bottom, and random bits of dark on light everywhere else.
The multicolor stripes look completely random to me, though. The bottom one, above the dark stripe, initially looked like it could be a zigzag, or some such, but there are too many inconsistencies.
It looks to me like that thing you can get from ombre yarns when you go around with the same number of rows for a while. Notice that it gets different as it goes up, mostly by the blocks of color getting larger, as would be consistent with an ombre worked over a decreasing number of stitches. If I were makign it, I'd use a blue/green ombre and either black or navy for the big stripe. I think it also has a thin stripe of the dark color separating the "registers" of the ombre.
But that's just my guess. I made a pair of socks once from an ombre that gave me a weird (but cool) grey and rust spirally thing down the foot of the sock just because of the number stitches I was using.
Pooling and flashing. What I can't figure out is the color interval. It looks irregular, to me, with the dark portions fairly short to fairly long light portions. But this is pure speculation, and I can't rationalize that with the fact that both earflaps look pretty much the same. Unless they reversed the frame in PoA for some reason (or GoF, for that matter).
Nothing really to do with the construction of the hat.. but in every pic he's making the same "oh god, I'm about to make a messy sneeze but I don't have a hankercheif" face.
