Thank you, Natalie Portman, for saving the role of women in this list from being a pastiche of love interests, killer androids, and nuns. ...Although that's a pretty great combo, really.

Which one was Natalie Portman in?

The Professional. She was only a little girl at the time! But, like Anna Paquin, she distinguished herself at a young age.

Alas, unlike Paquin, she peaked with The Professional and has been terrible in everything ever since. (She nearly ruined both Closer and V for Vendetta for me.)

Is KROQ still playing '90s grunge, hence the Sublime/Offspring references?

Last time Diana and I were in town, we drove in through the Valley, and hence kept riffing on Soul Coughing's "Screenwriter's Blues" - "It is five AM and you are driving to Reseda. We are all, in some way, going to Resesa someday to die."

Oh man, every time I'm in L.A. I have to make so many Soul Coughing references. The last time I was here, 10 years ago, we got lost on the freeway and ended up getting off in Reseda. I was in heaven.

Also yesterday I drove through San Dimas on the 57 and I had to yell "HELLO SAN DIMAS! Be excellent to each other!"

And yes, the world-famous KROQ and the clubs still play Sublime and '90s stuff. And radio stations in Seattle still play Temple of the Dog.

That's the thing. When I was in DC two summers ago, the American Film Institute's movie theater in Silver Spring, Maryland, would show Lawrence IN 70 MM on a REGULAR BASIS, and I NEVER MADE IT.

Shame on me.

bolsa, between brookhurst and magnolia.

you won't go wrong following your nose. but tay ho is excellent, and even more exciting is the dessert place three or so doors down from it. there are ten desserts that consist of delicious brightly colored sweet rice, and ten even tastier desserts that have the consistency of snot.

you can't go wrong with lee's sandwiches, though you can get them in fremont and sf too.
