- Just as you can never have too much Chris Cornell in Seattle, you can never have too much Sublime in SoCal.
- Hurtling east on the 210 earlier today, I saw a white stretch Hummer broken down at the side of the road, attended by a tow truck. All is right with the world.
- Sunblock is now a fact of life. Happily, shorts, tank tops, and flip-flops are a concurrent fact of life.
- I got to see a law school acquaintance of mine (he graduated last year and was on my journal) compete in the hammer throw at a track and field meet today out near Pomona. He's working part-time while training to make it to the next Olympics. Martin is apparently the only person to have gone to UW Law on an athletic scholarship. Those are some burly dudes, the hammer guys. If, my male friends, you think you are pretty strong, please see the gentlemen dragging their big steely balls on the ground, and confer with them.
- There is a women's hammer throw division. The participants tended to be built like the proverbial brick shithouse. It did my heart good to see big girls at a meet where most of the girls were built like colts or cheetahs.
- The South Pas/San Marino YMCA is underwhelming. I say this not because the facilities are inadequate for my needs, but because they don't hand out towels. I've belonged to two other YMCAs and this is the first I've encountered - heck, the first gym of any kind that I've been to - that doesn't hand out goddamn frickin' towels. They have paper towels (and spray bottles) for wiping down the equipment, but I had to go home to take a shower.
- Finally got the car's oil changed today after noticing there's a Jiffy Lube a whopping 2 blocks away on Colorado. Had half an hour to kill while I waited; discovered there's a Novel Café another 2 blocks beyond the Jiffy Lube. And there was much rejoicing.
- Fast & Furious: not recommended. I thought about work during part of it, I was so bored. And do you know what I do at work? I READ LEGAL DOCUMENTS FOR 8 HOURS A DAY.
- Having watched a truly bad movie, I got to thinking and I decided my top 5 movies are:
1. The Big Lebowski (Lebowskifest in L.A. in 2 weeks!)
2. Blade Runner (director's cut)
3. Brazil
4. The Blues Brothers
5. (tie) Amadeus/The Professional
Not only are most of those alliterative with each other, they're mostly about dudes. Thank you, Natalie Portman, for saving the role of women in this list from being a pastiche of love interests, killer androids, and nuns. ...Although that's a pretty great combo, really.
- It's my dad's birthday today. He got a puppy for his birthday. Actually they can't take the new dog home until Wednesday because it just got to the pound a few days ago and needs to get its shots and get its nuts cut off. Kaze, having been depressed, not eating, and listless since the death of her friend Bubbles last Sunday, was reportedly overjoyed to have a new friend. The dog is a shepherd mix of some kind, about 16 months old. Apparently that breed has a tendency to herd things. My parents have 3 cats. Q.E.D.
- I'm going to Garden Grove, in Orange County, tomorrow to see my grandma. "Garden Grove" is also a Sublime song. They're inescapable. Also No Doubt and the Offspring. It's like I'm in 9th grade again! Yay!
- Speaking of radio, I probably shouldn't like that hard rock cover of Ginuwine's "Pony" as much as I do. Then again, I probably shouldn't love Ginuwine's "Pony" as much as I do.
- Rereading Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat series is just one of the many small joys of my time down here.
I'm pretty damn happy being here.
