10 Peregrine was... unhappy. Why? Well, there was a list. And given that his name was high on said list, he could not be too surprised when a hand landed somewhat hard upon his shoulder in the station. He still winced and almost tore free, of course, surprised and startled could be antonymous of each other after all.
"Officer... Black, right? We need to talk."
He knew that voice, the detective who'd had him play 'bad cop' once. Huh... not the confronter he would have expected... Could this possibly be over something different? Bloody hell, he had no idea what else he might have done wrong. "Ah... all right," he replied, trying to angle his head to get a view of the man's expression but failing, instead falling into the rough step as the man led the way to an empty conference room.
Well, at least it wasn't an interrogation room. Either things were better than he'd thought... or worse.
The man released his shoulder, taking a seat and gesturing for him to do the same as he kicked his feet up onto the table. "You know. When I first met you I thought you were rather intelligent. I'm currently trying to figure out if you're actually dumb and just lucky... or too smart for your own good."
Peregrine stared at the man blankly... The hell? It wasn't the confrontation, it was the choice of words, it was how he'd bloody sat down. Peregrine could not help it, he was clueless. All he could muster was to take the seat he'd been gestured to and sit there stiffly waiting for the detective to reach something resembling a point.
All the detective did for the longest time was just stare, meeting his eyes with a lack of expression that was mirror to Peregrine's. Finally he broke it, shaking his head. "I'm rather leaning towards the second right now... and unfortunately. I can't say that's good for you." He kicked his feet back down, propping his elbows on the table and leaning forward as he sat up properly. "You going to tell me what made you think it was a good idea to steal a copy of a case file that you weren't even remotely connected to?"
Peregrine gave pause. Oh good, it wasn't for something new. Well, that was a bloody relief. "Ah... sir... I'm curious what gives you the impression I thought it was a good idea."
The man stared at him, incredulous now. "This is not the time to be smart, Black. We both know you took the copy. I am giving you a chance to tell me why before it goes down on your record."
Peregrine let the silence hang for a moment, not for effect, but because breaking it meant admitting aloud he'd been so foolish. It was, oddly, much more difficult than admitting it to himself. "I know the perp," he admitted, trying his damnedest to read from the man's expression just how much trouble he'd gotten himself into.
Not feeling particularly obliging in that front the detective merely nodded. "And?"
Peregrine furrowed his brow, giving a patently confused look. "And...sir?"
"And what did you learn from the file?"
Another stunned paused from Peregrine. "Well... ah... the case is deeper than anyone is looking so far, or ah, she knows for that matter."
"Hmm... And about her?"
"Ah...she's guilty."
"Good... good to know."
Peregrine started and the detective shifted to a demeanour much more... in character, a wide grin spreading across his face which only served to confuse Peregrine further.
"Uh.. sir?"
"Drop the sir. It's Darren, or if we're in front of someone important, Detective O'Riley."
"All right... but ah... that doesn't explain what just happened here to me..."
Darren laughed, shaking his head. "Right, well. I suppose I should. When we're done here I want you to go home and try to sleep, because you'll be on day shift with me for the duration of this case. I've chosen to take your theft as a request to join the case. Though kid, trust me. In the future, try the direct approach. Stealing case files of old friends? Awful easy to misconstrue."
"Uh... Yes si-Darren."
The detective laughed again, clapping him on the shoulder and standing. "Relax. Whatever it is you're trying to do here. You're in the position to do it."
"I apologise, but I'm too confused to relax."
"Yeah. I bet. Now get out of here. I'll see you in the morning. Bring your copy with you. I want to review in more detail what you've learned."
Peregrine stood then, giving a nod. "Yes sir."
"Darren," the detective grumbled good naturedly before leaving a rather confused junior cop alone in the conference room.
Bloody hell...
