[There's a flicker of what may be the golden glow of a flame on Gellert's face, but it just makes the shadows surrounding him deeper. If anybody met him before, they'd now notice his features have lost their brightness and under his eyes are shaded darkly as if he's been having trouble sleeping. He shivers then begins talking to the camera ( Read more... )

Dementors?... Then there is a cause for the melancholy.

Yes. I believe that muggles cannot see them but they are certainly there.

Why don't we start from the beginning with you explaining exactly what a muggle is and why they cannot see these creatures?

If a creature cannot be seen but exists on the physical plane then there has to be a way of detection other than sight.

They are easily detected by the chill you feel and a draining of any happy emotions.

Muggles are non-magical humans. I do not know why they cannot see them. Perhaps to make it easier for the dementors to steal what they want. Wizards have a defence against this but it is a spell and without magical powers it does not work.

Wait, hold on: what's a dementor?

It is a nasty creature. You must be able to feel their effects, even if you cannot see them.

I'm not sure. I figured it was just some weird thing Discedo did with everything going black.

Demenetors?.. You wouldn't happen to have a happy thought I could borrow?

The energy may help you if you were physically next to me but I cannot help anyone in other cities.

What is it these demenetors - DO?!

They drain emotions, pulling all happiness from you and feasting on your misery.

Dementors? What are they?

wandthief December 29 2011, 22:58:13 UTC
Creatures that feed on your emotions. Happier ones will keep them somewhat at bay but they are persistant.

I've heard of some strange things back home but something like that...

So that's what is causing everyone to be so depressed?

Yes. I assume you cannot see them?

[His face is lit up only by the dim light of the communicator's screen. Edmund wouldn't have bothered to pick up the gadget and reply if it hadn't been for the mention of magic.]

A wizard, eh? [Can't say that's particularly good news. Not until he gets to know this man better.] What's a dementor?

wandthief December 30 2011, 05:55:43 UTC
Yes, I'm a wizard.

A dementor - or, rather, many dementors are what is causing all this gloom - in both senses of the word. It's likely harder for you to avoid them when you can't see them.

And you can't conjure up a spell to make the unseen seen? [There's something telling him he'd seen it happen before, somewhere.]

wandthief December 31 2011, 11:19:32 UTC
Even if I had my powers I don't think such a spell is possible. Muggles simply do not see such things.
