In an attempt to catch up

My posting status as of late has been deplorable. My apologies.

And so, in an attempt to catch everyone up...

1. I took a position as a library tech at an elementary school. (I'm not officially a librarian because I don't have my master's in library sciences, but that's the role I'm filling.) I'm really enjoying being around the kids and am ( Read more... )

Is that the same job you wrote about before, the teaching one or is it a different one?

I hope your internet will be running again soon!

It's a different one. Originally I had planned on substitute teaching. Now, I won't be teaching at all, really, unless you count story time, which I don't. :) But the bonuses are that I will have reliable work, health benefits, a foot in the door of the schools, and a principal that will know me well and will hopefully give me a good recommendation by the end of the year.

Except that I just found out that unless I'm fluent in Spanish or teach junior high science, the possibility of getting hired without a teaching license is smaller than the possibility of getting struck be lightening.

*sigh*

But I get to be around books and kids all day long and they might pay for me to go back to school, so ... right now I'm not complaining. :)

Regarding the internet ... ME TOO! I'm a little appalled at how much I miss it!

The job sounds fun! How long a contract is it? Is it a school you'd want to teach at, if a position came open?

It's just a year-long contract, although I'm sure I could continue next year, if all goes well. It's definitely a school I'd want to teach at, but I'm not sure the principal would hire me without a license ... even if she liked me. What with all the testing these days, it'd be a risk. But it's such a great school in so many ways ... the principal is great and the school is really diverse. It'd be a great place to start, even though I think I want to teach high school. Experience is experience, right?

I guess we'll see where I am at the end of this year.

You can teach without a teaching degree? I don't think jessibud November 12 2006, 12:52:48 UTC
you could do that here. At least, I'm not sure. For sure not at the elementary level.

I did do a bit of subbing in high school (about 3 days' worth, lol!) when I was still in Montreal and that was long before I got my degree. It was enough to convince me that I'd NEVER step foot again inside a high school, though, lol!

The library job does sound great, though. Congrats again and enjoy! And you are right about the connections. You can never have too many good references; you never know where they will lead!

I'm just glad she didn't decide to be a monk! Unk said she's too full of life for that :)

re: the internet -- I hear there are cheap people in her house who keep switching providers to save money. I'm ready to go bonk them on the head.
