Telepath World

2008. Still in the throes of B5 mania I wanted to think about the world Lyta suggested, a homeworld for telepaths, and what that would be like. In terms of governance and economics, of community and family, of settlement and immigration; how the very existence of psi ability would fracture all those structures and how to put them ( Read more... )

I was thinking that there are way too many selkie stories out there already, but always room for one more?

This is the time I tried a new method for writing long. I broke the story down into vignettes, each featuring a character, either at a major moment or illustrating an important trait. When I stitched them all together at the end for the word count and to see what I had, it was rather Frankenstein monster-ish. My voice had shifted from broad all Scots to the slighter dialect in the excerpt I posted to full modern in the bits set in the current day. It also left the POVs all over the place.

I've also been wondering if the modern parts might need discarded. I haven't looked at them in a while.

Well, I certainly don't feel as though I've read too many selkie stories (in that I have maybe read one thing that referenced them?), if that helps. I think a story well-told, regardless of how many of that genre or subject matter are out there, are always worthy of being written.

I really do like the way you've written the story! I like narratives that are something different from the same-old "handful of characters with alternating POVs" or "limited first-person" or whatever else.

Is it less than helpful to say I'd read all of those?

If I had to chose I'd go with the Telepath World story, since there's not enough good B5 fic around these days. Although, the Pandora story looks very promising at this stage ...
