Requesting manga/manhwa/comics recommendations

Feb 28, 2007 19:52

I've been meaning to ask for some more manga/manhwa recommendations (you can recommend other comics as well :)), since I'm already caught up on most of the stuff I'm currently buying (The Wallflower, Fullmetal Alchemist, Vampire Knight, Nana). In fiction, my favourite genres are sf/fantasy and romance. I also like some action, some yaoi, and not ( Read more... )

nausicaa, miyazaki, manga, comics, bill sienkiewicz, manhwa, love & rockets, fables, star wars, steve leialoha, usagi yojimbo, bone, sandman, x-men

How about old favouvites: Ah, My Goddess!, Appleseed and Silent Moebius?

I loved the old Captain Britain series and the Sienkiewicz run of New Mutants as well. I was influenced by Sienkiewicz in my formative years of drawing and now it's stuck with me. :P

I've seen Applesee the live-action movie which was pretty forgettable. Did it just compress too much story into too short a time, or was it close to the manga?

Yes, I can see the resemblance to Sienkiewicz's art, though I think his works were even more stylized. Another favourite artist from that period is Barry Windsor-Smith, but he only did a few issues here and there, and never participated on a longer run like Sienkiewicz, for example.

I have not seen the live-action Appleseed. I can't imagine it being able to convey the complex storylines of the manga though.

There is also the Frank Miller Batman: Year One & Two that's worth reading.

Ooooh, goody. You don't know what you've unleashed.

Here are my recs.

My biggest rec is of Ceres: the Celestial Legend (or Ayeshi No Ceres). I love all of Yu Watase stuff (it's shoujo and romantic but also is very story and adventure driven). This is a fantasy/horror/romance and it's awesome. I did a picspam of the stunning art here: http://dangermousie.livejournal.com/671001.html (a lot of this is from the anime, but still). The picspam also has a summary. I am in love with this like mad. It's 14 volumes, all of them out ( ... )

But im missing some of the newest albums (only have up till #16 "Shrouded Moon"). My ex-boyfriend introduced me to the series and I've been a big fan ever since.

Books are up to 20. The travels with Jotaro(vol 18?) was my first. BTW, if you haven't read Space Usagi, you need to.

Space Usagi is huge fun. I love it :)

I love the series (I even wrote a UY recommmendation article for a local fanzine once - many, many years ago), but I stopped buying them for a while due to financial difficulties. I should catch up on them now...

I really LOVE the Sailor Moon manga. Yeah, I know, cliche, but it's really interesting. Card Captor Sakura is a little more kiddie, but also interesting, as are Chobits and Magic Knight Rayearth, two other CLAMP manga. Speaking of CLAMP manga, my sister and I enjoy xxxHolic. It's currently still going, so I can't tell you for sure how great the ending is, or whatever. Love Hina is also good, though catered a bit more to the men with all the skin they show. Hmm...more manga. Well, there's all the shonen stuff, like Dragonball Z, haha. Oh, and am I pathetic because I have read, and re-read the Pokemon manga a gazillion times? I have yet to read most of the Samurai Deeper Kyo manga, or the Ouran High School Host Club manga, but the anime were good, so I am sure they are decent too. Oh, but that isn't always the case. The Escaflowne manga is whaaaack.

Ok, sorry, I am rambling. :)

Manga: Planetes (sf), Clover (sf, hard to find), Tokyo Babylon (fantasy), Nodame Cantabile (music school drama), Pet Shop of Horrors (fantasy), Azumanga Daioh (comic strip, set in a high school), Yotsuba& (adventures of 5-year-old and neighbors), Alice 19th (fantasy)

Western comics: Charles Vess's Ballads collection. So, so glad he found a big publisher for it. (I was collecting the self-published single issues.)

Orbiter, one-shot sf comic, written by Warren Ellis

A Distant Soil, Colleen Doran (ongoing)
Finder, Carla Speed McNeil (ongoing)
both are sf.

Also, on a sort-of-comic thing: if you can find the illustrated version of Stardust--the stuff that was originally published as single issues--I think you'd like it.

I have this edition and think it the only true version of this book :). I used to have the novel version (without pictures) as well, but sold it away, because the illustrated version is IMO so much better.

At the moment I'm thinking whether to order the two retrospective books on Charles Vess's art that he mentioned on his blog (LJ feed of the same). They sound *really* tempting, but will probably be a bit too expensive for my budget :p.

I should probably invest in a better version of Stardust than what I have. I have the illustrated one, but in single issues. Not very durable, even if they're bound like graphic novels rather than the usual comics issue.

Thanks for the alert on those books. I'll have to see if the LCS did, indeed, get the one in (I doubt it, but oh well)
