A Day of Christmas Miracles

Jun 24, 2006 23:36

A Christmas miracle (shut up, I know it's June): Magnus has made a friend. Even if Ted's trouble, it's a good sort.

Peter showed up, and was his usual charming self with the captain. I didn't think they'd avoid fighting, but my captain walked away. I am so proud of him. There aren't words for it.

I hope he survives this change.

"I admit to getting a less than favorable impression of that elf. If I may ask, what do you know of him?"

"I'm sure they'll behave if you give them a stern talking-to beforehand. They don't mean to be trouble, they just get carried away." She pours neatly and offers him his cup as if she takes tea with little statues every day.

"As do so many things," he agrees, taking the cup and taking a sip. "Delicious," he proclaims.

"Ah, good." She sips her own, trying not to stare at him too much. She's really very curious about him.

He gets about halfway through his tea before he speaks again, looking at her suddenly and smiling. "Is there anything else you were wanting to ask me?" No, he doesn't read minds, but sometimes he gives the impression he does.

She blushes at having been caught. "I'm sorry. I'm too curious for my own good, I know."

"I don't mind. Many people find me unusual. If you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them." Another sip of his tea.

"Thank you. I guess...really, my question is, how? I don't quite understand."

The question isn't quite specific enough to answer. He could hazard a guess, but he wouldn't like to assume. "How?"

"Well...how were you...born?" She blushes a little. "If that's the right word."

"It's close enough. I was made, very carefully, by a fine sculptor. When someone creates something, and puts their heart and soul into it, the object itself develops a soul. That is how I was 'born', instead of simply remaining a cat doll. My friend Toto, as well, is the gargoyle of a crow."

"Oh, I see." She smiles. "You're like some chimera from my world, then."

"Chimera?" He sets down the tea cup and leans forward, looking interested.

"Things born of dreams and magic. Sometimes they're objects, sometimes they're creatures. Sometimes, but rarely, they're intelligent and just like people."

"I take it I'm something like the latter?"

She nods. "Of course. You're as much a person as anyone else."
