Arc I Arc II Yunho wandered into the kitchen, hands clenched around a magazine.
“Hyung, what’s that?”
Junsu asked, looking up from where he had been nibbling the food off the plates.
“That’s the idiotic article Eeteuk told me about this morning.” Yunho could still vaguely hear the screaming Heechul in his ears.
Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong immediately clamoured over to look at the magazine. All three were shaking with anger as they flipped through it.
“What the heck are these people talking about?” Yoochun suddenly exclaimed in English. Though none of the others actually caught the rapid English, they all understood the expression on Yoochun’s face.
“I’ve got a call from Manager-hyung just now. He said that none of us are to comment anything about this anywhere.”
“Are they going to do a reply to this?” Junsu asked. All of them knew that he was referring to the management.
Yunho shrugged. “But I know that they are not going to let this down like that. I know Heechul-hyung is planning something.”
“Well, knowing Chullie, they probably get what they deserve.” Jaejoong muttered, inwardly wondering if Heechul would agree to his participation.
“Jae, you’re not participating in whatever they are planning.” Yunho interceded Jaejoong’s thoughts, making the older boy pout at him, before turning back to his cooking.
“How come he always knows what I’m thinking about?” He mumbled under his breath, igniting sniggers from the two youngest in the room.
Yunho shook his head at Jaejoong’s words. All Yunho prayed for was that whatever they planned was not going to make the matter worse.
Jaejoong roped all three of them in the kitchen into helping him bring out all the food he had prepared in his haze of anger. He could already imagine Changmin drooling over all the food. Briefly, he wondered if he could persuade the other magnae to eat as much as his own magnae. Or half as much. Jaejoong corrected warily in his head, remembering just how much Changmin ate.
Junsu smiled at the two on the sofa, Changmin having draped a blanket over Kyuhyun’s legs. The slightly older boy seemed contented to let the youngest ramble away, though Junsu wondered if Kyuhyun was not lost in his own world.
“It’s food time!” Junsu exclaimed, breaking the soft conversation between the two on the sofa, laughing when Changmin immediately sat up, rubbing his hands eagerly. On the other hand, Kyuhyun seemed much more reserved in his reaction, slowly pushing himself into a more upright position, face grimacing a little at the slight pain that went through his hips.
The rest arrived behind Junsu with more food, piling up the whole table in front of them. All of them settled around the table, holding plates in their hands. Jaejoong began piling food on Kyuhyun’s plate, saying that he should eat more.
“It looks like you’ve gained another Umma.” Changmin whispered into Kyuhyun’s ears, earning a glare from Jaejoong.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing Hyung. Just that the food is great.” Changmin made a show of eating the grilled fish that he had on his plate. Jaejoong nodded, turning back to Kyuhyun.
“Eat, don’t just stare at it.”
Kyuhyun nodded, obliging to his hyung, placing the fork in his mouth. His memories turned to the time when Eeteuk-hyung had done exactly the same thing to him. Distractedly, Kyuhyun took another bite of the egg on his plate. He knew it was just an egg, but it tasted different to him. It did not have the distinct taste that he had gotten used to, the taste that he had associated Hankyung-hyung to.
Kyuhyun wondered why such little things reminded him of his hyungs so much, so much that he missed them that he wished for them to be by his side right now. Kyuhyun shook his head, staring at his plate. No, it’s better for me to leave. They wouldn’t want me if they found out what I did to my brother. His heart ached as he thought about leaving his hyungs. He did not want to do that. But he did not want to be hurt again. He was not strong enough to survive another time of people abandoning him. He would do the abandoning this time, no matter how much it would hurt him. At least, Kyuhyun thought, this way I can convince myself that it was my choice.
“Kyuhyun…”
Kyuhyun jerked out of his thoughts, looking up, wondering who called him. Then a hand touched his face, wiping the tears he had not even noticed flowed down. Changmin had stopped eating, noticing that Kyuhyun had gone too silent for his liking. Turning around, he noticed the tears. His call attracted the others’ attention, Jaejoong immediately gathering the younger boy in his arms.
“What’s wrong?”
Kyuhyun shook his head, embarrassed that he had cried in front of Dong Bang Shin Ki.
“What’s wrong, Kyu?” Jaejoong continued, refusing to let Kyuhyun back out.
“It hurts.” They all tensed hearing Kyuhyun’s words, the injuries Kyuhyun suffered in the accident jumping to their minds.
“What hurts?” Jaejoong refused to panic right now.
“Here.” Jaejoong looked down, seeing the younger boy pointing to his heart. He could feel his heart hurting along with Kyuhyun’s.
“Why?”
Kyuhyun was silent as the rest held their breath.
“Because…because I won’t see them again.” Kyuhyun’s voice hitched as he spoke those words. His resolve was already breaking as he said those words. But he couldn’t go back now. He didn’t want himself to be hurt more. He couldn’t stand seeing the disappointment in his hyungs’ faces when they realised what he did to his half-brother. Most importantly, he couldn’t bear knowing that he was the cause for all the hurt his hyungs were feeling.
They all fell silent at Kyuhyun’s words, none of them knowing what to respond.
“You’re selfish, you know?”
Yunho looked in surprise at the youngest.
Changmin ploughed on.
“You’re selfish. The world doesn’t just revolve around you. If it does, then you leaving would solve everything that is happening now.”
“Changmin!” Yoochun exclaimed.
“But it doesn’t! The world does not revolve around you! You leaving would not solve anything! It would only cause more hurt to Super Junior, to all your hyungs, to me.”
Changmin’s arms snaked around Kyuhyun, burying his head into Kyuhyun’s shoulder.
“And it would hurt you the most.”
Kyuhyun tensed when Changmin’s arms went around his waist and his words reaching Kyuhyun’s ears.
“But I’m not strong enough.” I’m not strong enough to go through all these. I’m not strong enough to recover in time. I’m not strong enough to look at my hyungs, knowing that I’m the cause of all the trouble.
“I’m not strong enough.” Kyuhyun whispered again.
“Then let us be strong for you. Let us be your support. Remember you’re never alone.” Changmin whispered again, arms tightening around Kyuhyun.
“Kyuhyun ah, you are strong. The fact that you’re here proves that you’re strong.” Jaejoong spoke, causing Kyuhyun to look at him.
“The fact that you did not simply ran away, the fact that you came to our dorm, the fact that you survived,” Jaejoong emphasised on the last word, “shows that you are strong.”
“Believe in yourself. Don’t doubt your strength.”
“There’s a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don’t have to be afraid
Of what you are.
There’s an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away.
Jaejoong began singing, pulling the two youngest into his arms after their plates had been removed by Junsu. Kyuhyun found himself pressed between both Jaejoong and Changmin, unable to move even if he wanted to. It felt nice to be cocooned in the warmth of his two hyungs - for he considered Changmin his hyung as well simply for the fact that Changmin was his senior - though it still felt to Kyuhyun that something was missing.
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive.
Yoochun, Junsu and Yunho all joined into the song as well, creating a beautiful harmony as Kyuhyun began to doze off as the song washed over him. He remembered a time when he was doing the same thing with his hyungs: the time in the hospital when he had told Yesung-hyung that he could sing. He could still vaguely hear the song in his head, remembering how happy he and his hyungs were as they sang to a dream they all held.
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you.
Kyuhyun felt his eyes begin to shut as he snuggled more into Jaejoong’s embrace. Though Jaejoong-hyung clearly felt wonderful to lean against, Kyuhyun missed Siwon-hyung’s hug, which never failed to make him feel safe and protected. He closed his eyes, pretending that the person in front of him right now was Siwon, imagining Siwon’s arms around him. He smiled.
It’s a long road
When you face the world alone.
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold.
“You’re not alone. We’re here for you.”
Kyuhyun remembered the words that so many of his hyungs - including Changmin - had told him time and time again, words that Kyuhyun could never bring himself to believe truly in for too many times had people left him all alone. He wanted so much to put his trust in those words, but his parents’ words kept echoing in his head.
“No one would want to care for a kid like you.”
Am I truly alone in this world?
You can find love
If you search within yourself.
And the emptiness felt
Will disappear.
Kyuhyun wondered if the lyrics were true. He wondered if he would truly find love within himself. Do I even know what love is? Kyuhyun wondered if what he was feeling then was love - his missing of his hyungs although he was surrounded by other hyungs, him feeling hurt when his hyungs were hurt, feeling sad when others were sad, and simply feeling happy to be with them - it did not matter what they were doing. He was just glad to be there with them. Is that love?
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive.
Kyuhyun could not deny that the song was beautifully sung. There was no doubt why Dong Bang Shin Ki was so widely appraised around Asia and the world. But Kyuhyun felt something missing. He felt that it was not perfect - for it was not sung by thirteen. There were voices missing in this harmony, voices that he had come to love. Hyung, I miss you. It was the first time Kyuhyun admitted to himself that he missed his hyungs. It was then Kyuhyun came to realise exactly how much his hyungs, how much Super Junior meant to him.
So, when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you.
Jaejoong smiled at the sleeping pair as he continued to sing. Their magnae had also fallen asleep. He hoped that Kyuhyun would realise what he had in front of him. Jaejoong knew that Kyuhyun was precious to all his hyungs in Super Junior. He was even precious to every one of them in Dong Bang Shin Ki. Jaejoong stroke Kyuhyun’s head as Yunho gently removed Changmin’s arms from Kyuhyun’s waist, directing the half asleep boy back to his room. Jaejoong placed Kyuhyun down on the sofa, draping the blanket over the young boy. He planted a gentle kiss on Kyuhyun’s forehead, hoping that Kyuhyun’s fever would go down soon.
Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow.
But don’t let anyone tear them away.
Hold on,
There will be tomorrow.
In time you’ll find the way.
“Hyuk? Kyuhyun’s sleeping now.” Junsu nodded into his phone, although Eunhyuk could not see his actions via the phone. Jaejoong was still humming the song to the sleeping boy as Yoochun began packing the food.
“He has a slight fever, but I think it’ll go down soon.”
Junsu walked towards the kitchen, picking up a plate in the mean time.
“He’s going to be alright Hyuk. We’ll be here the whole day. Besides Jae-hyung has already claimed Kyuhyun as his. I think Eeteuk-hyung would have to fight with Jae-hyung to snatch him back.”
Hearing the chuckles coming through the phone, Junsu smiled for he was glad to hear his friend’s laughter.
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive.
So, when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you.
That a hero lies in you.
That a hero lies in you.
That a hero lies in you.
Jaejoong ended the song, smiling as he arranged the blanket on Kyuhyun. They had not breached the topic of the rest of Super Junior coming, or Kyuhyun going back to their dorm. Jaejoong shook his head, standing. They would approach the topic later when the younger boy woke up.
