Summary: The actual meeting with the parents.
Arc I Arc II For the second time of the day, Kyuhyun snapped his eyes up to his father in shock. Kyuhyun watched as his father lowered his pride and explained to them what exactly he needed help with. It hurt to see that his father cared so much for his half-brother and not for him. It hurt that his brother had gathered so much love from his father. He would not deny it - he was jealous. He was jealous of something that he knew he would not receive from his father - or even his mother.
“So what does that have to do with me?”
His mother interrupted his thoughts, halting his father in the middle of his explanation.
“What does your son being sick got to do with me?”
She crossed her arms and leaned back on the chair.
“I thought you would be at least the littlest bit concern about your ex-husband.”
“Like you said, ex-husband. Why would I be concerned?”
“At least be a little concern about our son for what I’m asking him to do.”
“Our son? From what I know we have no ties between us since you left those years ago.”
Kyuhyun shrank back further into his seat. It was as if he was thrown back into the past. It was interesting how his parents had progressed from a full-scale shouting match those years ago to a calm quarrel sitting across each other, even though the tension cackled like electricity in the air.
“I left because of whom?”
His father’s attention was totally focused on his mother. It was like before where Kyuhyun had always appeared invisible to his father.
“Are you blaming it on me? Who was it who doubted his relation with his son? Who was it who said that he was not his son? Not ours, but mine?”
Kyuhyun’s mother pointed angrily towards Kyuhyun, who wished that he could disappear into thin air.
“I never said that he was not my son.”
“You only never acknowledged him.” Kyuhyun wondered why his mother was defending him.
“Why are we arguing about this right now?”
“How would I know? You were the one who brought it up.”
“Fine, let’s just take it that it was all my fault alright. I have no mood to continue the argument with you.”
“You’re never in the mood.”
Kyuhyun knew that his mother was just making things worse and hesitantly raised a hand to placate his mother. But his mother simply shook his hand away. Kyuhyun looked back down, hiding the hurt from his mother.
“All I want to know is whether you would help me.”
“Help you? You’re not even asking help from me. Besides I stand to gain nothing in helping you. Why would I do something that would put me at a loss?”
“I thought you would be a little concern over your son for what he is going to do.”
Why do they assume that I’m going to do it just because they ask me to? Don’t they want to hear my decision? Kyuhyun thought even though he understood the graveness of the situation.
“So he’s now my son? Whatever happened to ours?”
Kyuhyun’s father sighed, placing his hands on the table. “Why do you keep harping on that?”
“Who’s harping on it? Besides this whole conversation has no use to me. I don’t see why you asked me here.”
“Courtesy. Mere courtesy. And I thought he needed some support.” His father pointed to Kyuhyun.
The atmosphere was getting frostier, making Kyuhyun shiver slightly. The employees in the restaurant were ignoring them. All of them had taken shelter in the kitchen and Kyuhyun wished that he could do the same as well.
“He doesn’t need my support. Either way, all you need is with him. So I shall be on my way. I have no time to deal with you.”
Kyuhyun wanted to plead with his mother that he needed her there and not to leave him alone with his father, but his body would not listen to him. His father did not attempt to stop his mother when she stood up, collecting her bag and left without a second look.
“If it weren’t for my son, I would not be here as well.” His father mumbled under his breath not knowing that Kyuhyun had caught every single word.
Kyuhyun turned back to his father. It was not that he did not want to be noticed by his father, but more of the fact that he was not used to being the centre of attention with his father.
“Will you consider helping me?”
Kyuhyun was hesitant. He wanted to reject simply because he was jealous. Kyuhyun knew that his reason was childish but he didn’t care.
“I’m not asking you as the diplomat, but I’m asking you as the father of my son.”
Kyuhyun could almost hear his heart breaking. Am I not your son too?
“What do you need? I can give you anything. Money?”
It made Kyuhyun wish that he could have the courage to throw the glass of water at his father, not caring that it was not the most respectful thing to do.
“Anything? Can you give me the love you never did when I was young? Can you give me the family I never had when I was young? Can you give me my parents’ love?”
It was the first time Kyuhyun had talked back to his parents. His father looked shocked, and was about to speak when Kyuhyun stopped him. Kyuhyun did not want to hear any of the sugar-coated words that were meant to pacify him as if he was a three-year-old kid.
“Leave. Until I can find a reason to why I should help someone who abandoned his family, you’ll never get an answer.”
Kyuhyun stared at his father in his eyes, showing the hurt he had felt at his father, all the things he had gone through in those years without a father. His father flinched back, not knowing that his leaving all those years ago had so much impact on Kyuhyun. His father nodded his head and left, leaving Kyuhyun all alone in the quietness of the restaurant. Kyuhyun let his eyes fall to his laps. He could not believe that he had said that to his father. He knew that all his requests were an impossible dream. It would never occur in his lifetime because there was no way people could turn back time. And even if they could, it would do nothing to erase the wounds that had already been inflicted on his heart.
“Kyuhyun?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hankyung paced outside the restaurant worriedly. It had been a while since Kyuhyun had entered the restaurant. Hankyung knew that they must be having lunch and that it was normal for lunch to last a while especially between families, but Kyuhyun’s family was not a normal family. The family dynamics was not even present. Hankyung did not even feel hungry although it had been hours since he had breakfast. His mind was completely filled with thoughts about what Kyuhyun must be going through in the restaurant that he had almost forgot to message the address to Eeteuk-hyung.
I’m becoming like Eeteuk-Umma as the days go by. Hankyung shook his head, as he chuckled lightly.
Because Hankyung was so engrossed in his thoughts, he did not notice Kyuhyun’s mother stepping out of the restaurant. Instead Hankyung crashed right into Kyuhyun’s mother. Hankyung reacted quickly, pulling her upright.
“I’m sorry Mdm. I wasn’t looking.” Kyuhyun’s mother tidied her dress before looking at Hankyung.
“It’s alright. I’m fine.”
She left with Hankyung staring wide-eyed at her. Hankyung couldn’t believe that it was the same person who had caused so much chaos in Kyuhyun’s life. Why can’t she treat her own son like that? Then Hankyung turned his attention back to Kyuhyun. Does it mean that the lunch ‘date’ is over?
Hankyung hovered around the door, waiting for either Kyuhyun or his father to come out. Time passed, or so his watch indicated. Why haven’t they come out yet? Hankyung was ready to pull out his hair at all the waiting. Finally the door opened.
“Kyu...” His dongsaeng’s name came halfway out of his mouth before he realised that it was not his dongsaeng, but his dongsaeng’s father.
Hankyung hurriedly moved out of the way to avoid the same situation he had with the mother. The father looked a little upset and shocked, making Hankyung wonder even more about what happened in the restaurant. Hankyung contemplated if he should wait for Kyuhyun to come out of the restaurant himself or should he enter to find Kyuhyun. It took him less than two seconds to reach an answer.
Hankyung opened the door and entered. He had no intention of waiting any longer outside the restaurant and letting his thoughts torture him as to what happened.
“Welcome Sir.”
The employees had come out of their hiding place when Kyuhyun’s mother had left the restaurant. Hankyung ignored the waitress, heading straight for his dongsaeng who looked so lonely in the middle of the empty restaurant.
“Kyuhyun?” Hankyung said as he got close to Kyuhyun.
His dongsaeng looked deep in thought. About what, Hankyung had no idea. Kyuhyun lifted his head at his name. The anguish in Kyuhyun’s eyes made Hankyung take an involuntary step backwards. I should not have let him come.
“Kyu, is everything alright?”
Kyuhyun slowly registered that it was Hankyung in front of him.
“Hankyung-hyung, what are you doing here?” Kyuhyun blinked a few times, the anguish disappearing from his eyes.
“I thought I was supposed to call you.”
Though the anguish had disappeared, Hankyung knew that it was not a trick his eyes had played on him.
Hankyung answered sheepishly. “I was worried about you. So I waited outside for you.”
“Hyung...” Kyuhyun whispered, touched by his hyung’s concern.
That’s why it didn’t hurt that much when they were quarrelling about me.
“Hyung, does it mean that you have not had lunch?”
Hankyung did not answer. It was enough for Kyuhyun.
“Well, neither have I.” Hankyung stared at Kyuhyun.
“I thought you were having lunch with your parents.” Kyuhyun shrugged.
“The food didn’t taste good.” Kyuhyun ducked his head a little. “Hyung’s cooking taste better.”
Hankyung felt a smile bloom on his face when he heard Kyuhyun’s praise.
“Can you cook some for me?”
Hankyung nodded, smiling brightly at Kyuhyun.
Hankyung held out a hand for Kyuhyun, reminiscent of the scene in the bathroom the night before where Kibum offered a hand to Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun placed his hand on Hankyung’s, but he had no idea why his hand was shaking. They headed out of the restaurant with Hankyung wondering how Kyuhyun managed to turn the situation against him. It was supposed to be him comforting Kyuhyun as to what happened, but instead it was Kyuhyun who was reassuring him. Yet Hankyung knew that something was bothering his dongsaeng because the actions that Kyuhyun had just did in the restaurant was out of the ordinary that Hankyung knew that Kyuhyun was trying to hide something from him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kyuhyun opened the door to their dorm, opening the door for Hankyung to enter. They had bought some food on the way home to refill their fridge.
“Kyu, why not you change out of your suit while I cook?” Hankyung said sending Kyuhyun out of the kitchen.
“I’ll help you later Hyung.”
Hankyung nodded, taking out some ingredients from the bags. When he was sure that Kyuhyun was in his room, Hankyung took out his phone to call Heechul.
“Hyung, we’re home already.” He did not want the rest to continue worrying about Kyuhyun, although that was something that they would do all the time.
Kyuhyun sat on his bed. He knew he should be changing out of the stuffy suit - he never really liked all the formal dressing. But there were things on his mind - what his father had said to him, why Hankyung-hyung was acting a little weird in the morning, why his hand was shaking when he touched Hankyung just now and why he had automatically avoided Hankyung-hyung’s help when he tripped slightly on the way back.
Kyuhyun loosened his tie and lie down on the bed facing the ceiling. He had no answer to his father’s request. He had no answer as to why his hyung was acting weird. He had no answer to why he acted the way he did. Kyuhyun placed his hands on his head, not caring if he was messing up his hair. Why did he have so many unanswered questions? Okay, let’s sort it out one by one. Father’s request? I’ll think about it another day. Why Hankyung-hyung is acting weird? Or was acting weird this morning? He was fine last night, or at least I think he was.
Kyuhyun’s memory of the night before was still a little hazy. He did not take note of all his hyungs when they had arrived back at the dorm from the hospital. Why was my hand shaking? Kyuhyun decided to confront the problem that he felt would be the easiest to solve. What he did not know was that by answering this question, he would have answers to all but one of the questions he had lingering in his mind. Why am I so scared of touching Hankyung-hyung?
Kyuhyun racked his brain to search for any situation that might have occurred before to him for him to have such a reaction. His mind drifted back to the time where he had most interaction with people - the times he was with Jong-hyung. But it could not have happened during his time with Jong-hyung because Jong-hyung had always protected him. No one dared to bully him when Jong-hyung was around. It must have been some time after Jong-hyung passed away. Kyuhyun was about to continue on that thread of thought when Hankyung’s voice came through the door.
“Kyuhyunnie, are you done?”
“Coming, Hyung.” Kyuhyun quickly got off the bed and changed out of his clothes.
Hankyung was about to knock again when Kyuhyun opened the door.
“What took you so long?” Hankyung asked as he noted the ruffled hair.
“Thinking?” Kyuhyun answered honestly.
Hankyung gave him a stare that said something like “Don’t think too much” before telling him that food was reading. Kyuhyun nodded, jerking himself back when Hankyung had reached out to grab his arm.
It was a normal action for Hankyung, but today, it made the situation tense. Hankyung quickly walked towards the kitchen on the pretence that he was going to set the table. Kyuhyun caught the slight hurt on Hankyung’s face before he turned away. It made Kyuhyun want to find out the reason why he was acting this way. He thought as he walked towards the kitchen. He didn’t want the situation to remain as tense as it was.
Hankyung berated himself as he set the plates of food on the table. I should have been more careful.
“Come Kyu, let’s eat before Eeteuk-Umma comes back and scold us for having lunch so late.” Hankyung attempted to joke to ease the tension.
Kyuhyun forced a smile at Hankyung’s words as he sat down in front of the food. There was an awkward silence that reigned while they ate, not unlike the one Kyuhyun experienced with his parents.
“Hyung, did something happen last night?”
Hankyung’s spoon stopped just before it entered his mouth. Only when Hankyung realised that Kyuhyun was seriously asking that question then he knew that Kyuhyun had no full recollection of things that occurred the previous night.
“What do you remember of the previous night?” Hankyung asked Kyuhyun, wanting to know before explaining to Kyuhyun.
“Erm, I woke up in the middle of the night and then...”
Kyuhyun explained that all he remembered was all the way till he started washing his hands under the tap.
“I don’t remember how I ended up in my bed the next day.”
As Kyuhyun spoke, bits and pieces of the memories began drifting back into his mind. He remembered asking Hankyung to let go of his hands because he wanted to wash the blood off. Then he remembered the slight pain in his back when he was slammed against the wall by Hankyung. He remembered struggling against the hold. Then Kyuhyun dropped his spoon.
“Kyuhyun?”
Hankyung was really troubled by Kyuhyun’s lack of response. Maybe I shouldn’t have attempted this alone. Hankyung got a shocked when Kyuhyun’s spoon cluttered down on to his plate.
“Kyu?” Hankyung approached Kyuhyun from the side, slowly as he watched the trembles run through his dongsaeng’s body. Hankyung wished that Kyuhyun would react to him a little.
Or that Eeteuk-hyung or Chullie-hyung will be back soon. Someone up there decided to take pity on Hankyung as the door to the dorm opened right after Hankyung made his wish.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Chullie-hyung, are you alright?” Kibum asked, coming out of his sulking mode after their performance because it meant that they would be seeing Hankyung and Kyuhyun soon.
Kibum had noticed that Heechul and Eeteuk were acting a little weird, even though he was sulking. Heechul kept playing with his hair, a sign that was obvious to everyone in Super Junior that something was bothering Heechul - that he was upset. Eeteuk wore that frown of his on his face - the one that spoke of nights of endless worrying because he had no idea what happened to one of his dongsaeng.
“Hmmm?” Heechul turned to Kibum.
He had not heard what Kibum had asked him as he was searching for his phone in his bag. Now, Kibum was sure that there was something going on.
“Ah ha!” Heechul exclaimed as he found his phone. And he found it just in time to answer Hankyung’s call.
“Hannie! You’re home already? We’ve just ended.”
Heechul nodded at whatever Hankyung was saying.
“So you had no idea what happened?”
Kibum watched, joined by the rest of the members as Heechul bit his lower lip, listening to Hankyung on the phone.
“We’ll be back soon.” Heechul hurriedly hung up the phone, finally noticing the rest staring at him.
“Was that Hankyung?” Eeteuk stopped anyone else from questioning the confusing conversation Heechul just had over the phone.
Heechul nodded. “They’re home right now.”
“How was the meeting?”
“No idea. Kyu had not said anything to Hannie.”
Now they were talking cryptology to the rest.
“Care to enlighten us normal human beings who have no idea what you two are saying?” Yesung said, seriously wondering what was going on.
“In short,” Eeteuk spoke after glancing at Heechul, “Kyu and Hannie went out just now. Kyu had a meeting with his parents.”
As expected, those who were about to carry their bags dropped them as all their jaws dropped down wide.
“His parents? Why on earth is he meeting his parents?” Donghae voiced out the thought that had been running in Heechul’s and Eeteuk’s mind ever since they heard it from Hankyung.
“Don’t know. But if we want to find out, we’ll have to head back.”
Eeteuk’s statement sent all of them on a frenzy to pack their things.
“Do you think they will be fine?” Heechul asked Eeteuk as the two stood by the side of the door holding their bags.
Eeteuk turned to Heechul. “I hope so. I hope so.”
