these thoughts were inspired by a little paragraph in austinkm's latest entry, though i'll admit it's been something i've thought about quite often. it has to do with the term "blog" and how it SO doesn't apply to livejournal ( Read more... )

I must admit that I have thought of my LJ as a blog in that extremely literal sense that you mentioned. It is a log, on the web. But you do have a point; the word 'blog' has become associated with these slick independent sites with fancy layouts and stuff. The most baffling cultural movement, IMHO, was when CNN added a Blog Watch feature, as if to show off how in-touch they were with common opinion. I mean, it could be a genuine effort to move with the times, but it seemed rather pointless to me, like an effort to increase their street cred or something.

Anyway...perhaps 'journal' is, and will remain, the better term for what we do here :) It certainly transitioned smoothly for me from the old days when I regularly kept a paper-and-pencil journal.

Hey, as you said, since the definition of "blog" is "web log", LJ is so a blog. lol

It's on the web, and it is a log. It is also a journal. It's a webpage, it's a tool for expression, it's art, it's not art, it's potato, and poTAto.

All I'm really sayin' is stressin' about a word cause most views of it are negative doesn't change it's definition.

Actually, if enough people in the world decide that a word has a new definition, the definition does change, so that's not even true. But I don't think the word blog applies to that quite yet.

It's kinda like "being a high school student". I hear that phrase a lot, and I think of it as being generally negative because most high school students are immature jerks. There's still cool students though, but they can't really be escused from the term.

Anyway, my thoughts on your thoughts.
