It's a lot you ask of people. As we grow more experienced/jaded in life, we are more careful about the people we choose to befriend. Friendships are investments, and some kind of consistent return is expected over time. If we hear from other people that a potential friend can be a "creep" (your word choice) but not always, it might not be a good idea to make that investment--especially if it's just a matter of time before it happens
