“Thank you for helping me out these past few days, Adrian.”

A cute couple of Los Angeles citizens passed by the outside table of the local McDonald's, close enough to see the two of them. Peter pulled the hood of the jacket Adrian loaned him tighter. They needed to be careful-- the paparazzi were everywhere and could stick flashing cameras in their faces at any moment, capturing photographic evidence of his presence in this world.

“You're my brother.. in a manner of speaking.” He shrugged in reply and grabbed a handful of french fries. “I just don't know how to explain your being here to Milo. Actually, I think it's better if we don't. He would freak.”

“I take it he's not used to people popping in from alternate universes?”

“Uh.. no.” Adrian slowly answered. “That's definitely a 'no'.”

“As soon as I learn how to control my new power, I'll leave. I promise.” He hated to be such a problem to Adrian, even if the other swore he didn't mind. He couldn't figure out why Adrian was bothering to put up with him at all. He'd been working on breaking down this power and figuring out how to work it for three days now.

Three days of sleeping at Adrian's house. Three days of hiding from anyone who might freak out by meeting a real life version of a television character. Three days of mooching off the other man's food and hospitality. There was a wall holding Peter back from understanding this power, one he couldn't phase through. Even after all this time, he was still no closer to going home.

“You can stay for as long as you like-- I hope you know that Peter. I like having you here.” He covered Peter's hand with his own, trapping it beneath the table and his very physical touch. Adrian winked, a mischievous little wink that made Peter cough on his hamburger. “Do you understand what I'm getting at?”

Under the table, Adrian's hand reached for Peter's thigh-- it was all a bit much. He may be an actor with a different life, living in a separate world but his face was the same and all Peter could think was that Nathan (or someone very Nathan-like) was grabbing him in a very wrong place for a brother to grab their brother. He jumped from the table, spilling his soft drink. “Oh my-- I.. uh..”

“I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.” Adrian moved to wipe up the spilt drink, soaking up the cold drink with napkins. He hands busied themselves with a task that did not involve Peter-- and Peter was very, very thankful for that. “I just thought-- but you climbed into bed with me last night. What was that about?”

“I sleepwalk!” Peter shouted but then pretended to be calm about the situation. It was no use making a scene on the crowded street sidewalk. Milo's reputation couldn't take any more abuse after his whole dating-a-girl-nearly-half-his-age-thing Adrian explained about yesterday. He sat back down, hoping no one noticed him jumping and scrambling away from Adrian. “I thought I told you that... not that I don't think you're attractive but you look like my brother and it's.. a little creepy.”

“I guess I can understand that.”

“You don't sound very happy about it.”

Adrian frowned. “I just miss Milo. I didn't tell you this last night when I brought up his relationship with that girl, but we had a thing before he started dating Hayden. All I wanted was to kiss him one last time.. and then you popped into my life and I thought maybe I could get that from you. One last kiss.”

“Is that all you want?” Peter could hear the heartbreak in Adrian, the painful longing for a love that would never be again. He knew what that was like, after losing Simone and Caitlin.

He desperately wanted to make it up to this man, especially after Adrian helped him so much during the past few days. He searched for a way to make this up to the man and realized that one kiss would not be that bad. He wasn't Nathan after all; it would be ethically and morally okay to indulge his homosexual side this once.

Adrian nodded.

Peter leaned closer to him, closed his eyes and welcomed his advances for the moment. He waited for the other man to kiss him, but instead he heard an unsure query. “Are you sure about this?”

“What can it really hurt?”

The floodgates holding Adrian's emotions back were released after he receiving his acceptance. He wrapped his hand around Peter, placing it on the small of his back and pulled him into a tight embrace and a tender kiss. Peter wondered why Milo left him because the way he was kissed him now was so hot and heavy, so much more experienced than some teenage girl could ever hope to duplicate.

A light flashed in the distance, but he ignored it. He was enjoying himself far too much to stop this kiss so soon. Peter opened his eyes, wanting to see the man who was kissing him-- that was a bad idea. He looked like Nathan, every feature and wrinkle and it was a bit too much for him to handle. He broke away. “Okay. That was good. I'm sorry I can't.. do anything more than that.”

“I know it's weird for you.” Adrian nodded again, then gestured to a cameraman across the street. The paparazzi were watching them. “We have company.”

“Aw shit.” Peter bent his head down and pulled his fallen hood back over his head. He wasn't being very surreptitious, kissing Adrian in broad daylight. Superheros were supposed to be better keeping secrets.. secret. “I know you told me to keep my head down. I fucked up. Are you and Milo going to get in trouble now?”

“Milo might.. and Hayden will probably get really pissed off.” Adrian laughed and took a sip of his soda, happily relaxed. “Which only makes it all the more funnier. Don't worry about the fallout. You helped me with my little problem and that means a lot to me.”

“I'm glad. I wish I could make things better with you and Milo.”

“Not all relationships are meant to be, I suppose.” They shared a sad smile before Adrian sat up straighter in his chair and raised his eyebrows. “What's happening to you? Is this that power of yours? Are you leaving?”

Peter looked at his arms as they went invisible, fading from this world. There was the familiar prickle in the back of his brain while his powers turned themselves back on and began pulling him away. If he concentrated hard on his landing this time, Peter would reemerge in New York City and be back with his brother and niece in a few seconds.

He was ready to go.

He'd helped Adrian find closure with his ex-lover-- and perhaps that kiss with his brother's look-a-like helped Peter with his own issues because although he hated to admit it, a part of him always wondered what it would be like to kiss his brother.
