*laugh* Thank you. I just wanted to strangle people because it's like the looked for something to fight about, in an inappropriate place, and was mad when people told them to STFU.
It's fandom, not a court case. Sometimes an interpretation is just that. We all see the characters slightly different. And it's not always a racist hit.
I don't really play in the fandom, I just get peripherals of what's going on from my roommate and my flist, and I heard about this whole race thing, and was sure people were talking about the show. (Not that I understand how the show is racist at all...) But this was over someone's fanfic?! I just asked my roommate to confirm and all I have to say is Seriously?? WTF.
I play minimally. I read the wank report before it hit FW, and went, "Wtf!?" It makes no sense to have this big of a deal over a story, an AU at that. She's using her personal interpretations of canon as the basis. It's kinda what fandom does, you know? Those two fappers are just spoiling for a fight.
Apparently the show is racists because the people of color aren't given as high flaunting jobs as McKay or Caldwell. I think. That's what I'm just starting to figure out. I just assumed the actors fit what was needed.
The report is here, and you might want to take a shot every time Con and Lier make an unfounded accusation at the writer or holler racist at someone.
“I didn’t intentionally do anything in that way, but if that’s what you saw, I’m sorry it offended you since that was never my intention” That is pretty much when stuff got completely out of hand, I haven't read that fic because the summary was dumb (as I told you in email), but good god man; short of some seriously blatant racism popping up I dont know what all the anger toward that one person is about

You can get it on a shirt. *nods* Go write it up and press it on.
Is there some subtle institutionalized racism in this fandom? Hell yes. Is it that girl's fault? Hell No. Is her fic the biggest offender? Hell no.There might be some undercurrent going on in fandom, but I tend to avoid people that I don't like. If they offend me, I avoid. It's a simple technique. I guess what I mean is that I haven't noticed it, and it's not because I'm a racist. I live in the South; I see real racism every day in real life, on both sides. It was simply a niche that she thought Ronon would fill because he tends to thwap Rodney upside the head verbally when the man needs it. Personal views. He wasn't in that cell, locked away

Yes, exactly. The fic I started reading that had Teyla as barely literate? I stopped reading, and avoid the author like the plague because clearly that person is not my kind of writer/person. But if wank had started over that I'd have been all for it, because that was fucking bullshit.
I'd probably be thinking differently if this wank had started in a different way, but it sprung over a fic that is just not the kind fic anybody should be getting all up in arms over. I mean damn kids.
There is some definite racism/sexism going on in this fandom, and man some of the shit that's come out of this wank makes me want to avoid sooo many damn people. Like whoever the hell posted that racism doesnt count with Aliens...even though most of the wank is around Earth based AU's. Oh SGA fandom, this is what happens when half the fandom see's part of the season early and folks get bored, Sci Fi Channel! *SQUEES some more over new EPISODES!!! WOOOOOO
( ... )
Well, if it makes you feel better, SGA isn't the only fandom playing that record to death. But I don't have anything much to add because I agree with you....totally agree, actually. Fandom politics, wherever they are, make me roll my eyes. But I've seen it before...nothing new here, no matter how creative the "warriors" think they are.
Oh, it's definitely not the only playing ground, fandomally speaking, but it's been pretty...prevalent in the past couple days. I don't get why everything has to be addressed as an affront to everyone else. I mean, frankly speaking, it's an AU story that's just supposed to be cute and funny. Not everything should be focused on political agendas. It seems like this week that people think their versions are the only ones worth discussing, and that's not true. You wanna talk about the racism? Fine. Do it in your journal, in a logical manner. Otherwise, nothing's gonna come out of it.
Honestly, all this meta has made me NOT want to *be* a part of a pretty cool fandom. The entitlement issues just make me wanna scream. It's no longer fun, and that's a pity. I read Livia's post, and with all due respect to her, it's not *my* job to write up a story that makes sure everyone's an equal. It's not realistic because I can't perceive to understand all my audience's triggers. Nor should I have to.
I totally, totally see what you're saying. Heh, even seeing that post, I went and thought about my The Bar AU, in which Atlantis is a bar...Rodney plays piano, John tends bar, Teyla and Ronon own the place....guess that's equal enough. :-D
I find I'm much happier if I just don't go to places like fandom_wank....I know they're there, but if I don't go look, they can't piss me off!
I didn't even pause to think about if mine were equal. I've written semi-AUs before. But the fact of the matter is I can't write about racial issues when I'm not on that side of it. It's better to avoid and muck it up, then write something for the sake of it. My opinion anyway. I typically write Ford, Teyla, and Weir...once with Sora. All characters that are largely unpopular in fandom. I don't like them because everyone else does (or doesn't). I like them because they ping with me. I wrote "A Friendly Face" where Teyla and Ford were friends, or the beginning of, and those are people of color. I didn't discuss it because it's NOT the defining issue of them with me. They've got more to them than that. And she was the only one to get a present

Very well said. (And humorously too. *g*)

Fandom is supposed to be fun. Not a lecture on
