i'd like to take this opportunity to say FUCK ALL OF YOU PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES. i hate it when mother fuckers are ALWAYS going on about this underground band and that underground band, reciting the history of the group as well as the bio of every fucking member. people like that get on my nerves more than anyone else, the people who force music on ( Read more... )

Dude, this "stop using genres to describe bands" arguement is getting stale. Seriously, if someone asks me what a band sounds like, I'm not going to say "well, they play using disonant dropped octaves and open D breakdowns and scream lines with wierd phraseing." im going to say "They are pretty much just standard Metalcore." To say that to call a band "indie" or "hardcore" or "folk" is a lot easier than describing every little aspect of a bands sound.

And for anyone to call anyone else pretentious is laughable dude. Everyone is pretentious, everyone thinks the music they listen to is better than the next guys. And if someone feels like learning about some bands history...awesome...let them. The same way that you or anyone else learns about something else and tells everyone about it.

Getting mad at people for liking music a lot is kind of dumb.

although this sounds like im being mean, i dont mean for it to, this is just my opinion on the subject.

it's not that im mad at people for liking music a lot, it's just that now it's out of control. if there's a group of bands that sound a certain way, even if it's just like 5 of them, there's suddenly a genre dedicated to their sound. i mean, everything ends with fucking 'core' now. and i mean, i understand really generalized labels like hardcore and folk and indie, because there are enough bands and shit out there that sound a certain way. but it's out of control, like think of all the fucking labels-- hardcore, grindcore, crust, thrash, metalcore, punk, anarchopunk, street punk, etc. it's lame as hell that when a band emerges that sounds different, they're automatically assigned a label. i'm not pretentious about my music, i dont force it on anyone. i've recommended bands to people based on what they like already, but if no one likes what i like, fuck it, it doesnt change how i feel about what i like. and i've never thought my music was better than someone elses because different music affects people differently. i couldnt care ( ... )

OH MY GOD!!!

i am so glad you said that--

i once read a low review on pitchfork of the mars volta, and the guy made a comment on how omar rodriquez-lopez and cedric bixler used bongos and the latin sound-- like he expected them to do so since they have latin heritage... but then he gave missy elliot a crazy good review, never once citing how cliche it was that a black artist was doing hip hop. fuck that!!
