Hooray! Well kinda - I mean, I'd already made the decision not to see this in the theatres, and your review only solidifies my decision. Yay for saving $13.50!
I'll wait for the rental, when I can watch/poke fun at it with mah frenz.
Such mixed feelings on this. I mean, I'm not sorry I saw it on a big screen, because I think it's one of those big screen movies (not to the extent that say, Transformers or some other epic movie is, but still). Really beautifully filmed. And I mean, I liked some of it.
On the other hand, I kind of regret spending $11 on it.
Never fear! That's what a giant 48inch tv screen is for! The montrosity of home entertainment products has helped me become even MORE pinchy with my pocket money. Plus, I really think I probably want to shout at the movie, which wouldn't fare well in a theatre, ehehe.
And I have a new focus for my nerdy movie-going quota: that new Star Trek movie, because YAY. XD
AUGH. AARRRUGH. Fucking dickbags. Fortunately, my audience reacted (at least audibly) the way they were probably supposed to. There was maybe a little tittering when Eddie started in on Sally, but once he struck her, it was gasps and then dead silence.
I wanted so badly to be entertained by this, too -_- I liked the movie versions of From Hell and V For Vendetta (and was at least entertained by League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) so I figured Moore's stories just worked better in movie format. Yeah, only with HEAVY EDITING and as long as it's not just like, VERBATIM his comics in movie format.
I mean, shit, it's not like I don't make off-color jokes with my friends about stuff (or even like rape hasn't been included among those things) but for some reason, I just.. get the feeling that giggling, "Hit her again!" is a different breed of animal completely.
Yeah, I figure I'm going to have to come up with something to say on Monday when I get back to classes (because it's full of Moore fanboys and probably some fangirls and I don't need to alienate myself from other art students this early in the program). Something honest but not, um, incendiary. Thing is, I'm pretty sure it works fine as a comic book (just not one I can read easily because MOORE WALL OF TEXT) but you CANNOT make movies like you just posted up the pages of the graphic novel and used them as a storyboard. It's just.. that's just not on O_o
Plus I think you're probably more familiar with Moore's body of work. I'm just talking out of my ass. An ass that sat around from 10pm until nearly 3am for this movie and would like an apology from me, only all I can do is go, "Well I didn't KNOW what to expect!"
As someone who didn't know a thing about what to expect going in:
- I had the vague idea that it was about a team of superheroes. I thought they'd be, you know, more conventionally superhero-y. Well, I found out otherwise like, a minute into the film. - I wanted to strangle all the characters by the end. (Maybe Adrian a little less because of his fabulousness omg. 8D) - I could have done without the softcore porn and gratuitous violence, seriously. And the gore. I would have been just as happy--nay, happier--if they'd cut out 50% of it. - I tried not to look at blue peen. I tried really hard. But something inside me just had to confirm it was still there, and it was still blue.
I can say I was entertained, but I think I'd have a hard time watching it again. Which is a pity, because I found the story and characters intriguing overall. Ah well!
I think this movie, had it undergone some heavy-handed editing, could've been amazing. Powerful, even. Or AT LEAST fascinating to watch.
Fascination doesn't blend well with boredom, though -_-
Oh, and apparently we missed out on some kind of vagina monster toward the end. I don't know if that would've contributed more or less to the ending, which I'm still conflicted about. It would've been interesting though.
The monster squid, instead of the Dr. Manhattan machine? Hearing about it just makes me think it was bad idea genes. It's a little too cliched comic-book-y, isn't it?
Eh, yeah, totally agreed about the boredom. I think I zoned out like halfway through only to be jolted back by a loud noise. And were the creators totally in love with Laurie or what? They lost me when Dr. Manhattan started telling her how she was super special. :\ Bleh.
What're your issues with the ending? I thought it was pretty interesting how it was left kind of morally grey.
I have no idea what the context was. I just saw something like, "the vagina monster would've made stuff HAPPEN instead of.. not" so, yeah.
Oh no, I definitely liked how gray Adrian's solution was, and how the other Watchmen chose to deal with the outcome. More that.... ehh you know what, you're right--with everything else that happened in the movie, me having issues about the feasibility of warring nations suddenly being harmonious because of a common enemy is probably missing the bigger point. I'll retract that.
Oh, yeah. I don't really have a problem with violence or gore, but it DEFINITELY had that. A lot. Like, did you ever see Pan's Labyrinth? They'd look like they cut away from the violence right before impact.. but then go right back to it and show it in full. Kind of like that, only MORE and a lot more visceral, if that's the word I want. Totally gratuitous.
I stopped watching Pan's Labryinth at the point where this officer crushed a can on the poor man's face and broke his face. That got me crying XD;;;; The only gore I managed to watch was Sweeney Todd XD;;

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
Shoulda saved my money for that.
Or Transformers 2.
Or even that Terminator movie that I wasn't interested in except the trailer actually looked pretty fun and.. also Christian Bale.
Or maybe that gangster movie with Johnny Depp and also Christian Bale.

I heard from renee that it was pretty bloody and gore-y than expected.
I don't like gore and violent movies so that turned me off... (batman-violent it more easier to watch...)
maybe i'll watch it out in dvd...
