Who watches the Watchmen? (About 6 separate premiere screens' worth..)

Mar 06, 2009 16:57

Some friends and I caught the midnight premiere of Watchmen and I got a chance to sleep on it a little.

A few SPOILERS under the cuts.

Overall (plus possibly unpopular opinions, though I don't actually know yet) )

comic, movie, movie review

Hearing about the soundtrack cemented my decision not to see it... the rest of it was my "eh" reaction to the GN a few years ago. (Though I'm glad they ditched the squid - I LOLEd when I turned the page and saw... that.)

With all the other Narm moments going on in this movie, I think the vagina squid monster would probably just have been a drop in the bucket XD

When I read the comics, so many years ago, I was left feeling deeply uncomfortable. If the movie brings about that reaction too, then I'd have to say it's pretty close to the comics. XD

I am deeply amused by reports of the peekaboo penis.

Personally, it made me uncomfortable in the bits where it should, and then left me bored pretty much everywhere else.

re: It was certainly lovingly made--almost worshipful of the source material--to the extent that I wonder if this might actually be the first movie based off Alan Moore's work that he'd approve of.

According to the wikipedias the Moore-ster wanted the comic to emphasize the differences between comics and film. Sooo…looks like A-Moore will probably still a big fat grumpy pants!

Sounds Like I'll probably wait for it come out on DVD to watch it. SUCKAH. Instead of watching Watchmen, I totally got to do irritating programming HW for several straight hours!

Innovation is born out of discontent! Let's just hope he edits it better next time.

Also, the end of the scene on Mars would be awful in any medium except possibly mime.

How was the violence? That's what's keeping me from seeing it, judging from what I've heard (graphic scenes of peoples' heads being shot, et cetera).

Now that I know there's a rape scene, I'm not even sure if I'd want to see it, violence or no.

One of my friends is squeamish about violence too, and she's probably just not going to see it. Personally, I'm not bothered by gore, but it's... pretty graphic. Sawed off arms and recently exploded bits of human clinging to ceilings, that kind of thing.

Attempted rape, though still a horrific scene. The scene does focus on the outright brutal violence (power) moreso than the sexual element (which tends to be what Hollywood!rape focuses on), but like some of the other more gratuitous sequences, it really does run on the long side and.. I dunno, its handling wasn't UNproblematic for me -_-

I haven't seen the film yet, so I probably shouldn't be reading this review, BUT--

Yes, Laurie and her subplots are totally pissant dull in the comics too. The only stuff of hers I don't mind is the stuff with the Comedian, and only because it's fascinatingly horrifying in retrospect.
