Who watches the Watchmen? (About 6 separate premiere screens' worth..)

Mar 06, 2009 16:57

Some friends and I caught the midnight premiere of Watchmen and I got a chance to sleep on it a little.

A few SPOILERS under the cuts.

Overall (plus possibly unpopular opinions, though I don't actually know yet) )

comic, movie, movie review

As someone who didn't know a thing about what to expect going in:

- I had the vague idea that it was about a team of superheroes. I thought they'd be, you know, more conventionally superhero-y. Well, I found out otherwise like, a minute into the film.
- I wanted to strangle all the characters by the end. (Maybe Adrian a little less because of his fabulousness omg. 8D)
- I could have done without the softcore porn and gratuitous violence, seriously. And the gore. I would have been just as happy--nay, happier--if they'd cut out 50% of it.
- I tried not to look at blue peen. I tried really hard. But something inside me just had to confirm it was still there, and it was still blue.

I can say I was entertained, but I think I'd have a hard time watching it again. Which is a pity, because I found the story and characters intriguing overall. Ah well!

I think this movie, had it undergone some heavy-handed editing, could've been amazing. Powerful, even. Or AT LEAST fascinating to watch.

Fascination doesn't blend well with boredom, though -_-

Oh, and apparently we missed out on some kind of vagina monster toward the end. I don't know if that would've contributed more or less to the ending, which I'm still conflicted about. It would've been interesting though.

The monster squid, instead of the Dr. Manhattan machine? Hearing about it just makes me think it was bad idea genes. It's a little too cliched comic-book-y, isn't it?

Eh, yeah, totally agreed about the boredom. I think I zoned out like halfway through only to be jolted back by a loud noise. And were the creators totally in love with Laurie or what? They lost me when Dr. Manhattan started telling her how she was super special. :\ Bleh.

What're your issues with the ending? I thought it was pretty interesting how it was left kind of morally grey.

I have no idea what the context was. I just saw something like, "the vagina monster would've made stuff HAPPEN instead of.. not" so, yeah.

Oh no, I definitely liked how gray Adrian's solution was, and how the other Watchmen chose to deal with the outcome. More that.... ehh you know what, you're right--with everything else that happened in the movie, me having issues about the feasibility of warring nations suddenly being harmonious because of a common enemy is probably missing the bigger point. I'll retract that.

For now. I'm waiting for fandom to realize how flaming Adrian was. :D

I'm pretty sure Adrian's flamingness--between the purple suits and purple triangle insignia--is already heavily coded enough for more than the fandom alone to realize it.

I thought it was his intelligence and sophistication that was the telling feature. :P

And mmm I'd go for Adrian/Dr. Manhattan. At least slash fic can make these characters relatable.
