mystery "meats"

hey veggies,

i'm a lacto-ovo weightlifting veggie coming to terms with the protein challenge. i eat eggs, tofu smoothies, protein shakes, and have just learned the usefulness of pressing tofu.

thing is, i'm getting a little bored. i understand that tempeh and seitan are excellent sources of protein, however, my attempts at incorporating them ( Read more... )

Seitan isn't soy based, actually, it's grain based (wheat if I recall). Personally, I like Seitan as-is. I like plain tofu, too, so I'm probably not going to be much help to you.

you're right... seitan comes from wheat gluten.
i put it in some soup the other day ... that wasn't bad.

I'm not really a big fan of soup, myself. Usually I have it heated up in a frying pan (not quite fried, though). The brand I usually have comes with a small flavour packet, too, if I recall.

Tempeh I haven't done much cooking with, for Seitan though, the key is to marinate the shit out of it. Season as much as you can and cook until you can cook no more, that's the only way you'll get rid of that seitaney taste.

I was just by my library the other day, and shockingly enough I ran into a whole bunch of soy cookbooks. They were seperate from the vegetarian ones. Haven't gotten a chance to look through them yet, but you'd be surprised how useful it can be to check out a cookbook or two from the library and photocopy useful recipes. I'll post any good recipes after I'm done looking...
