bagels

So, I've been experiencing a weird issue with bagels. Almost every time I eat one, whether it is store bought or from a bagel place, I get a really upset stomach and have to go to the bathroom immediately afterward. I have bought and eaten specifically vegan bagels and almost every time (I can think of one place where they haven't made me sick) I ( Read more... )

This might be a dumb question, but are you having these problems after eating plain bagels, or are you eating them topped with something?

Usually topped with Tofutti cream cheese or hummus.

Well in that case, I would bet on the tofutti or hummus being the culprit before the bagel. That's just my initial guess though.

Tofutti cream cheese is so rich it makes my stomach sad. So maybe it's that?

Everybody seems to think that plain bagels are always vegan, but I haven't eaten bagels virtually ever while vegan because they always have ambiguous ingredients. The thing I come across most is mono- and/or di-glycerides, but I took a quick look online and it seems like plain bagels can also contain:

+ DATEM (another one of the "can be made from animals or plants" ingredients)
+ "natural ingredients" (again, could be anything.. dunno what they'd put in bagels, but I never cease to be surprised at the weird crap in food)
+ L-Cysteine (was usually made from duck feathers, some now might be made synthetically ( ... )

L-Cysteine is not usually vegan, and in lots of bagels.

I avoid bagels unless I can check ingredients. They are often not vegan, but ask, because sometimes they are! Like Panera or generic grocery store bagels usually aren't, but bakery bagels sometimes are.

I make my own bagels! Very easy, actually. Probably about the same difficulty as bread, with less rising time, plus you have to boil them (literally you just dump them in boiling water for 1 minute). Tasty! They go stale after like a day, though.

but would that actually cause a stomach ache? i always assume stomach aches to be caused by dairy because our bodies aren't used to it

it could be a slight wheat allergy- if i have small amounts of wheat, i'm fine, but if i eat something wheat dense (like a bagel), i feel sluggish afterwards.

I dunno, but the same thing happens to me when I eat store bought tortillas.
