What tips can you give me concerning traveling as a vegan? In two weeks I will be going abroad as a vegan for the first time, to Gran Canaria, and I was wondering if you had any great advice on what not to forget and what to bring, etc., and maybe even on the island/Canary islands itself. I already know that I will have to bring my own meal on the

I already checked and they don't offer full in-flight meals; the flight will be somewhere around 5 hours and you can buy sandwiches etc. on board, but they could not tell me anything about those + I think it's a waste of money if I can also bring my own :)

Oh yeah those sandwich packs are bullshit, none of them are even vegetarian!

Hey, I'm currently living in Spain and I had to take a break from being strict vegan because of how difficult it is. If you are staying in hostels you can cook meals for yourself, although there isn't that much that is too easily available as far as tofu, etc. There are lots of fruits and veggies though! You might want to pack some peanut butter and eat a lot of sandwiches for protein.
Suerte.

Unfortunately I won't be staying in a hostel but in a hotel, for about two weeks, so there will be no option of cooking my own meals. Taking peanut butter is a great idea though!

I am going on a tour of China this summer, and so far my plan is to bring like 20 packets of tofurkey jerky? haha and protein bars maybe too? A stock pile of nuts might be good as well. Other than that I am not really sure.

I would bring some food with you and though I personally I. haven't tralled internationally as a vegan but rather around the us and internationally as a vegetarian. I would say do your best and go as far as you can healthfully and respectfully. Are u living with a host family? Sadly/also interestingly food is a huge part of a lot of cultures. I would maybe advise the annoying thing of sometimes what u don't know can't hurt you and to not offend the people around you. I'm thinking of going abroad sometime soon and I know even as a vegetarian living abroad can be hard. So do your best and just follow veganism as much as u can: do as little harm as possible, but within your parameters. Don't starve yourself and/or make yourself miserable. Just do your best. Sorry that was rambly lol

I'm lucky that my boyfriend speaks fluent Spanish, so no problems with ordering food and such :) I'll keep a look out for any great places and post about it for you! I have never been anywhere else than Europe (France, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Germany, etc.) and the East coast of the US so I'm really curious what the available foods in restaurants will be. I know they really focus on seafoods but I hope I'll be able to have, like you said, lots of bread and salads.

Random, but right now I'm watching the news and there is this guy who is deckhand on a big ship that tries to save whales (half of the crew are women) and he is just telling that the entire crew is/eats vegan :)

Yeah, I already thought of this as well. I'm not going to kill myself over accidentally eating something non-vegan, but that won't mean that I'll go crazy on the seafood over there, of course. I'll be staying at a hotel for about two weeks so no host family :) I have travelled abroad a lot as a vegetarian though, stayed a month in Athens last summer, but that is always easier unfortunately.

when i first travelled to non-vegan friendly places, i told myself i would be more flexible, and eat a more lacto-ovo diet to avoid starvation but i couldn't bring myself to do it. i actually went mostly raw while travelling, eating lots of fruits and veggies. i ate about five cucumbers in a week. i lost five pounds in three weeks and felt great. and just about everywhere you go will have lots of nuts, grains and produce. good luck and have fun!
