What tips can you give me concerning traveling as a vegan? In two weeks I will be going abroad as a vegan for the first time, to Gran Canaria, and I was wondering if you had any great advice on what not to forget and what to bring, etc., and maybe even on the island/Canary islands itself. I already know that I will have to bring my own meal on the

I agree.

I have traveled to India, and around the UK, to Copenhagen and Malmo (Sweden) as well as paris as a vegan. In the UK, Denmark and Sweden I didn't have much trouble, Paris was a lot of bread and salads because a lot of their cuisine is based around dairy, meet and eggs but do-able.

India though... like the poster above said food is a big part of the culture, and its best to not offend when you can. There were times when I accidentally ate things that weren't vegan, and a few mistakes and at least once where it was eat something vegetarian (not vegan) or go hungry and I made the choice to eat.

I think its a huge hassle while traveling to lug food around so I tend to wing it and its gone pretty well. BIG TIP: learn how to say without/no and the main foods that you don't eat (eggs, milk, cheese, meat, fish, poulty) in whatever the local language is- that has saved my butt many a time!

Best of luck, enjoy your travels and let us all know how it goes! I may be traveling to the Canary Islands in about 9 months so any tips, tricks or good restaurants you find I'd love to hear about! ♥

I'm lucky that my boyfriend speaks fluent Spanish, so no problems with ordering food and such :) I'll keep a look out for any great places and post about it for you! I have never been anywhere else than Europe (France, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Germany, etc.) and the East coast of the US so I'm really curious what the available foods in restaurants will be. I know they really focus on seafoods but I hope I'll be able to have, like you said, lots of bread and salads.

Random, but right now I'm watching the news and there is this guy who is deckhand on a big ship that tries to save whales (half of the crew are women) and he is just telling that the entire crew is/eats vegan :)
