I know this is probably a silly question but I only know 1 strict vegatarian who's black and we've both been wondering the same thing... how many other black vegetarians/vegans are out there? It gets kind of lonely when you feel like you're the odd one out heheh... I recently went to my mother's friend's mother's house (lol what) and I declined the ( Read more... )

I'm a black vegan!

Check out vegansofcolor.wordpress.com or soulvegfolk.com for others.

Strict vegetarian is a term up for interpretation. I was a "strict" vegetarian because I didn't eat chicken at the beginning of my veg days according to some in my family.... urgh...

Woot!

Thanks for the links btw, I tried a good search before and never came up on these two!

I personally thought it was a person who consumed animal products as long as that animal didn't have to die or be tortured to obtain it.

If you're of the female persuation, you might also consider joining the sistah vegan collective, an e-list. It's rad folx.

This is the traditional definition.

However, since "vegetarian" pretty much doesn't mean anything in many parts of the world (ie: it means you don't eat beef... when we all know that vegetarians don't eat animals or slaughterhouse by-products), "strict vegetarian" can sometimes erroneously mean "ovo-lacto vegetarian".

Generally though, most (real) vegetarians and especially vegans consider "strict vegetarian" to be similar to a vegan diet -- it can mean honey or not, but it usually indicates someone who eats roughly vegan but doesn't partake in the other vegan livestyle choices: no furs/wools/silks, no animal testing, etc.

My boyfriend is black and vegetarian, but eats vegan about 97% of the time. He was even veg while in the coast guard doing his thing in the middle east which is far from easy because on the ship there's rarely a veg option and people used to look at him like he was crazy. He often gets the same response, and this is the bay area :X

I've always thought of a strict vegetarian who ate a vegan diet, but still used leather/silk/wool and things that are tested on animals, etc... It's a diet, not a lifestyle. Just my opinion!

I know a couple black vegetarians, but now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I know any who are vegans.
