ok so the only class that is available for me to take in order to graduate Summer (I'm at The Ohio State Univ) is Anatomy including CAT DISSECTION. I emailed the prof to ask if I could still pass without doing this. Awaiting her response ( Read more... )

I'd rather dissect a cadaver than a cat any day. If she says that you have to do it, I just wouldn't register for the class no matter what. I've stood firmly against dissection all of my life, even before I was a vegan, and I know that if I ever dissected something, I would feel absolutely horrible about it. My conscience and peace of mind just simply isn't worth a good grade or a sooner graduation date. Try another college, for sure.

They can't discriminate against you for your beliefs. My school has a rule about discrimination and for example we have to do teacher evaluations for all our professors - the last question asks if the professor has treated everyone equally regarding such things as race, sex, religious beliefs. To me being vegan is the same thing and if your school has such a rule you should definitely bring this issue up with administration.

I know the Animalearn program is a good one to get programs from.

Here is their page of resources to get alternatives from.
Hopefully there is a better cat one you can get loaned for free. :)

Would that be ethical??

It's far more ethical than your alternative. If she approves, I'd definitely go this route so that you can graduate (even though it will probably still be upsetting to work your way through the virtual dissection).

Good luck!

Can you ask her what material you need to learn so that when you look at different dissection computer programs you can find one that covers those topics?

By using a computer model you are showing that you don't need to cut up animals to learn- very ethical indeed. Good luck with it!
