I am sorry that you are having unpleasant experiences.

At Taco Bell, you can also get tacos, but sub beans for meat and subtract the cheese. You can "veganize" lots of things there if you need to.

I would check asian places, thai, vietnamese etc that you see. Depending on the place you can usually get a decent veggie meal or some tofu for pretty cheap. At least something other than a fast food joint.

I live in Nebraska and we usually go to a place like that and veganize things that have the option for it.

I would look for burrito joints too like chipotle, Qdoba or Moes (has tofu). Food there can be 2 meals.

yea i ate at taco bell last night. the asian places are few and far between and they're all called "china" or "china palace" hahahahah. i've almost given up even trying to get food at real restaurants.

perhaps the chicago diner was just having a bad day, because it's my favorite restaurant. i have never been there for breakfast, but i have always enjoyed their lunch and dinner. unfortunately it's a 4 hour drive for me (i live in detroit), but i believe their chickn' parm sandwich and mac n' cheese is well worth it. i think the best place for vegan breakfast in chicago is soul vegetarian east.

once i was driving and saw the trucks with the pigs and i totally started crying! their cute little snouts were sticking out of the holes :(

the diner is totally overrated, soul-veg and blind faith cafe (in evanston) are hands down better IMHO. and if either of you are ever back in chicago with a couple of days to eat, check out handlebar and karyn's cooked.

we stopped at that soul vegetarian place first, but it was in the ghetto. i know cuz i currently reside in a ghetto. and my travel mate didnt' want to stop since all his worldly belongings were in the car.
but next time i'm in chicago thats where i'll go even if i have to drag people.

uhh indeed, i'm as cracker as they come and i ate there 1 x per week for 6 years, never once did i have a problem with anyone, nor did my car get jacked, nor did any of my stuff get stolen. plus the few blocks that it is in are not ghetto at all, there are pockets of the south side where black pride means something, and the few blocks soul is in shows it, if you look carefully.

i had more problems with people in the "better" / "whiter" neighborhoods like wrigleyville.

soul veg = the best, all vegan, black owned, soul food. 'nuff said...

catch it on the drive back ;)

Ditto - I’m sorry you had a bad experience at the Chicago Diner. It’s one of my favorite places … but I’ve almost always gone there for lunch or dinner, so maybe they don’t do a good breakfast.

That's too bad about Chicago Diner! I have always wanted to try it. I am not in such a hurry after hearing that review. You should stop in Minneapolis MN. We are becoming quite a veg haven here in the midwest.

I hear you. It's really hard to find restaurants that are vegan friendly. I've had the same problem when traveling.
Keep your hopes up. sometimes they are accomodating can can serve you rice and veggies.
