i've been hanging out in this community and i can't decide if it's the place for me. I don't know exactly if there is a name for what i believe in. i'm not vegan in the sense that i think the reason i shouldn't eat meat is because of animal cruelty so much as i'm really concerned with the environmental impact that eating meat has-- i'm also ( Read more... )

Yeah, I adopted a vegan diet primarily for environmental reasons also. And so veganism is one of several principles that guide my purchasing decisions - I also try to think about whether I need something at all, whether it's overpackaged, how far it had to be transported to get to me, whether the people who made it were treated fairly, whether the raw materials were sustainably grown, etc.

I like this community because there are a lot of posts like yours from people who think about the environmental and social implications of their actions. People who are tuned in to the ubiquitous cruelty to animals in our society and who are motivated and passionate enough to act against it tend to be the same sorts of people who care about social justice and the environment and work to make the world a better place.

I'm vegan for 3 overlapping reasons: my health, compassion, and environmentalism. I couldn't tell you which was more important, because I firmly believe that we are all connected and interdependent, and that there is no such thing as a life without consequences, which is why I - and many other vegans - are very concerned with ethical wares and social justice. Compassion should be extended to the self as well as to others, so cut yourself some slack. Hang around the community, and if you don't like it, you're under no obligation to stay; if you do, you're more than welcome as long as you behave like a grown-up :) There are regular posters here who aren't actually vegan, but who are genuinely interested in the issues raised here, and who make valuable contributions.

Well being vegan is about not eating or using animal products. But the reasons for going vegan are quite varied. I call myself vegan as it's the closest word to describe my eating habits. Everyone approaches things the same way.
I make my decisions on various levels, taking all sorts of points into consideration. Like anti-globalisation, the locality of a product, the environmental impact as a while, my health, the cost :(, and the vegan-ness. I feel it's complex and any effort is to be applauded. So just do your research and keep trying :). Most people in this community will be pretty supportive whether a person is entirely 'vegan' or otherwise.

environmentalist vegan here too. *waves hand*

over time, i adopted basic animal rights beliefs and realised veganism was good for my body, but the environmentalism part is still the main reason i'm vegan. you might find that the more you read about the basic tenets, the more you identify with them.

as long as you still abstain from the non-vegan foodstuffs etc. you're still vegan in my book.

and you can just skim past the entries asking about coke, and other grey area stuff. (or bring your knowledge into the thread. as long as everyone acts respectfully, all would be good in the world.)

i don't remember if there have been archived entries that deal with this. but at least now there's a tag for this particular kind of discussion. :-) i'll poke around and check it out.

in the meantime, try the LJseek function on our info page. type in environmentalism or something. if you run across a similar entry, feel free to tag it yoyurself. :-)
