i've been hanging out in this community and i can't decide if it's the place for me. I don't know exactly if there is a name for what i believe in. i'm not vegan in the sense that i think the reason i shouldn't eat meat is because of animal cruelty so much as i'm really concerned with the environmental impact that eating meat has-- i'm also ( Read more... )

Hello englishteacher,

I think you should view it all sort of as a continuum. I mean, everyone is doing what they can at this moment in time. I am, I guess, not absolutely vegan yet because I am using up some honey I have in the cupboards, oh, and some mayo! I intend to switch to alternatives as I run out of those things.

I hear what you are saying about the social injustice of corporations. It was only recently that I became aware of things like "Fair Trade" coffees and cocoas and things, but now that I have that information I can be aware and make sure I support it. I try to shop local farmer's markets in season and small local bussinesses whenever I can. I, for one, would LOVE it if you would share your insights on products to be avoided because they exploit their workers or the environment or whatever. As vegans, we have accepted a bunch of limits to our diets because we feel it is the right thing to do for one reason or another, so a few more limits might not be a big deal to most of us.

I mean, it is tough enough to find certain products in vegan form at all, but given any time to adjust I think vegans are a very responsive community. For us, first we dropped meat, then dairy and are working on the rest. In the meantime, I have made a move toward more organic foods and started examining charities etc. I hear coca-cola is a big violator of human rights (was it?) so I am attempting to end a lifelong addiction to that too. Educate us, educate me! I bet if you give us a chance, you will find there are many kindred spirits here.
