I've noticed that if I eat "a lot" of soy, I break out... but I've found that if I limit it I have no problem. I use almond milk instead of soy milk, avoid overly-processed soy products, and limit my tofu or tempeh meals to once or twice a week. I think a lot of people have acne problems when they eat too much soy because it mimics estogen... though if you're allergic that's a totally different story!
Yeah, it's probably more of a sensitivity than an allergy. I have the same theory as well about the estrogen in soy. Probably more people are sensitive to it than others.
Out of curiosity, have you tried eating soy in it's non-processed form? As in tempeh and miso? They're both fermented and are actually the "good" form of soy, while tofu, fake cheese, etc. actually irritate the body.
Oh, and I saw this recipe online for soy free soy sauce
8 oz molasses 3 oz balsamic vinegar sugar to taste
I love miso and tempeh. I've eaten tempeh numerous times but right now I am unable to tell if it will bother me. So far my plan has been to eliminate it all together, and then maybe try small amounts of certain things. I would love it if I could do will with tempeh and miso :-P
Thanks for the recipe! I think I will try that soon. I'm curious as to how long the shelf life is.
I forgot to mention I love your Hellboy icon! I'm so in the mood to watch #2 tonight.
Also, I remembered a recipe I bookmarked that makes AWESOME teriyaki sauce.
1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon cold water 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup soy sauce (use the molasses/balsamic/sugar recipe above of course) 1/4 cup cider vinegar 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the cornstarch, cold water, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger and ground black pepper. Let simmer, stirring frequently, until sauce thickens and bubbles.
It's meant to be baked over chicken but I'm sure it's great over ANYTHING.
There's Bragg's Liquid Aminos if you're looking for a soy-free alternative you don't have to make. I find it at the natural foods grocer.
As far as alternatives to margarine go, there really isn't anything that's exactly the same. But, for toast and the like, you could go a la Dino (from the Vegan Freak podcast), and toast bread in a pan over herbed olive oil. Also, for baking just use oil.
For teriyaki sauce, you could probably use one of the soy sauce alternatives as a substitution in a regular teriyaki sauce recipe, like this one.
Doesn't sound like an allergy, since an allergy won't give one cystic acne. Hormonal imbalances will cause cystic acne. I have found that liver supplements will help, since the liver is responsible for helping to clean hormones out.
It's possible to be soy-free and vegan - that's how I eat the vast majority of the time - though I have yet to find anything quite like the wonderful tasty texture of fresh extra firm tofu.
I should really reword my entry. I think what I have is a sensitivity rather then a full fledged allergy. I get more than one cyst when I eat tofu, just one that was really painful. This happens every time I either eat tofu, or drink soy milk (or get on a meat-alternative kick).
I know it's more then possible to eat vegan without soy, just trying to look for alternatives to some of my favorites. I love tofu, so it sucks (but I still plan on eating it anyway every now and then).
For butter alternatives try sunflower marg.. some do not have soy or coconut butter.
Aternative to soya sauce is hard...vinger might help,pepper...salt... with some syrup. as mentioned before. WHAT ABOUT SEAWEED.. dulse is quite good.. maybe the best to ty.I have used that when I ran out of tamari.. but it is expensive.
Maybe other things hemp oil, nut oils... some might be hard to cook with though. turmeric & garlic are great..
OH chinese five spice... with some liquid added... maybe a good test?? i have no soy allergy but i was on a crazy diet for my eczema for 6 months. I used braggs.. they only soy i was allowed to have...

And there have been discussions recently about soy-free tofu, which is made from chickpea flour. There is a Burmese recipe here: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Resort/3871/tofu.html For when you get sick of seitan!
Instead of margarine, you can use oil, or applesauce in baking sweet goods.
I try to limit my soy intake too. :)
