Chapter 10
“… I realized that I love you.”
The whole world seemed to stop.
Jaejoong’s mind went blank… completely blacked out as if God had just sucked the life out of him. He could not think straight. He felt as if he was suffocating… not able to breathe the slightest air for whatever reasons he was not sure himself.
That was when he realized Yunho’s firm hands were still cupping his face- the latter carefully waiting for him to response to that sentence.
Almost hurriedly, Jaejoong pushed away those hands with his own and shot Yunho a very, very disgusted look in his eyes as he stormed back inside the house, slamming the door right in front of Yunho’s face. It startled the man so much that Yunho felt as if electricity had just jolted down his spine, leaving him in guilt and regrets that he wished he could fix… but he knew he could not. No, not now and probably… not ever.
Yunho waited in front of the door, in case Jaejoong decided to forgive him… as impossible as it sounds, Yunho felt the need to try his luck. Though it was not the greatest idea he could come up with, Yunho admitted deep down in his messed up mind.
From behind the door, Jaejoong pressed his body against the wall and it was not long before his whole body was dragged down to the floor. His eyes were wide open and not blinking even once ever since his ears twitched to the sound of that confession.
Jaejoong did not know what to feel, or how to react to that. Yunho had completely caught him off guard, just as he was starting to get a grip, yet again.
Always the perfect timing, Jaejoong hissed under his breath.
At this point, he was contemplating rather insanely in his mind whether to swing open the door back again or to just stay in where he was right now. But one thing was for sure, Jaejoong knew his heart was too weak to face Yunho. He just could not bear the tension between them any longer and because of that, he decided to just give it out.
Maybe not tonight.
As the clock ticked away, Jaejoong realized that it had been no less than an hour now since then, and yet he still did not hear any signs of car leaving his front porch. He wanted to take a look through the curtains but was too scared to find Yunho looking back at him instead.
A soft knock on his front door startled Jaejoong back to reality. His breathing became heavily uneven as he shifted nervously on the floor, trying to grope at everything in contact to help him get back on his feet. Before he could even turn around to face the door, he heard a soft yet audible voice from behind it.
“Jaejoong-ah…”
His heart sank deeper than ever when Jaejoong heard his name being called in such a pleading, desperate voice.
He’s still there.
“Please… talk to me. Just this once, Jaejoong-ah.”
That voice again.
Jaejoong cupped both of his ears with his hands and tried to shake away the words that had been forcefully trying to stay in his mind. It occurred to him that the more he tried, the less it worked. He tried pacing around the house now but to his luck, it did not work either. He clenched his fist in a tight ball, ignoring the pain it was causing him but the voice still echoed in his mind. Jaejoong started biting the bottom of his lips and traced it with his fingers-an act that he always does whenever the nerve gets to him.
Yunho, who had been waiting for an hour now, looked down to his feet in defeat. He knew that this would be the outcome but somehow the disappointment he felt inside was still unbearable. He wanted to make things right again, he wanted Jaejoong to give him a second chance but he knew, what he had done to Jaejoong, what he had said to Jaejoong clearly does not deserve any chances at all.
He looked straight at the door once again, unable to do anything else other than that.
“I’m sorry… really, I am.”
Yunho finally gave up.
He stepped down away from the front door, ready to leave that spot he had been occupying for a while now. A part of him told him to stay but his senses told him he was done for. There was, indeed, nothing else he could do to make it up to Jaejoong. He was a jerk-Yunho admitted- and a jerk does not deserve a second chance.
Maybe you’re right, Jaejoong-ah. You deserve better.
Yunho forced his legs to walk away from Jaejoong’s front porch and off to his car. He was not sure whether he was crying or a tear had found its way down his cheek until he saw a droplet of water fell on the ground, just as he was about to open the door to his car. He felt a jab on his heart; his chest tightened into a knot and the pain was so unbearable that Yunho had to grab onto the car to stabilize himself. Somehow, albeit all that, he managed to get inside his car and was off in no time.
If he was to look back one last time, Yunho would see the other peeking through the curtains; his own eyes were swollen now.
Jaejoong saw-mind you no one could ever miss it-the tears that Jung Yunho had shed before he went away. It broke his heart to see the sight of that but no, Jaejoong was not ready to forgive… nor was he ready to forget. He had been hurt far worse than that, enough to erase all sorts of feelings he had for the other latter. He just wanted to put an end to all of this shit… and nothing more.
All these fucked up situations however, did not stop him from thinking about what Yunho had said earlier.
Did he really think confessing his love would soften my already broken heart? Or… did he really mean it? But what do I care, right? He’s a jerk… and will always be nothing but that.
Somehow, out of nowhere, the images of them together in school eight years ago went flashing back in his mind. If it wasn’t for Yunho, Jaejoong would have still been locked up in the closet, away from the preying eyes of the society. It was Yunho who had helped him to open up to the people around him at that time. It was Yunho who had given him the push to be more confident in himself. It was Yunho all along who was always there by his side, when no one else cared, not even the slightest. It was Yunho… Jung Yunho.
But that was just about that, that was eight years ago.
Now, everything has changed… obviously.
“Jaejoong?”
A tap on his shoulder made Jaejoong jumped out in surprised, eyes grew bigger to the size of a golf ball. He almost hit the person out of reflex but the other was quick enough to grab both of his hands and secured them away.
“Jaejoong… whoahhh. Chill! It’s me… Yamapi!”
Hearing that familiar voice and familiar name, Jaejoong stopped struggling and focused on the being in front of him. It was indeed, his senior-Yamapi.
“Gosh, Yamapi… you’ve scared me!” Jaejoong exclaimed in horror.
He freed himself from Yamapi’s hands uncomfortably and began rubbing his hand on his chest, relieved that it was not some burglars trying to broke into his house. But then again, he wondered…
“How’d you get in anyway?”
Hearing that, Yamapi smirked- a little too playful now. He patted the other’s head lightly as he walked towards the sofa and literally made himself at home.
“I know where you put your extra key, Jaejoong… I’ve been here a lot, remember?”
Oh. That’s right.
Jaejoong gave him a weak smile, as if acknowledging that fact but slightly uncomfortable at the same time. Of course, he was glad that when he was hospitalized not long ago, Yamapi was the one who always lend a hand on everything. Foods, clean clothes, even the hospital bills, which Jaejoong had turned down politely but to no avail. The latter insisted to pay for it… for whatever reasons Jaejoong just could not figure out why.
Yamapi had been such a sweetheart to him… maybe that was why it made him uncomfortable to always have him around for a visit. He did feel something towards Yamapi long ago, but he did not want the feelings to grow back in his heart. No, not now. Not when his life was literally falling apart.
Jaejoong took the empty seat beside Yamapi and casually grabbed the remote control on the table. Yamapi, being all too observant, noticed the marks on Jaejoong’s palm… the effect of him clenching his fist a while ago.
Without hesitation, Yamapi took Jaejoong’s hand in his and looked disapprovingly towards the shocked latter.
“What’s this?” he asked in a serious tone.
Jaejoong tried to claim his hand back to his side but Yamapi was stronger.
“Nothing… it was nothing.”
Jaejoong felt his whole body tensed up for being so helpless in Yamapi’s grip. He looked anywhere but in the other’s eyes. But what Yamapi did next was what gave him away.
Carefully, Yamapi led Jaejoong’s hand up to his mouth and blew lightly on it. He rubbed it with the back of his thumb and traced where the nail marks sank. He stole a few glances in the process, only to find Jaejoong looking back at him in astonishment. Yamapi could only smile as he brought his head closer to Jaejoong’s… their faces were less than an inch away from each other. It was not long before the gap was closed completely when Yamapi sealed their lips with a kiss, hand still holding the other.
The time had stopped right here… for them.
But for someone else, it did not.
Somewhere in Tokyo City at that same exact moment, a driver in a Chevrolet had lost control over the car and it had caused it to spin uncontrollably in the middle of a busy road as it came to a stop only after it had hit the divider. People had been surrounding the car now but not long until they started to scatter away from it again when a truck appeared out of nowhere and crashed mercilessly onto it.
Everyone wondered what is going to happen to the driver… but he… he never got the chance to do that. All he ever wondered before the truck had knocked him out was whether it is really over between him… and Kim Jaejoong.
TBC.
