McCain jokes with Letterman. Obama and McCain dress up in penguin suits and tease each other. Palin is rumored to appear on Saturday Night Live. We suddenly seem to have an election that looks a lot like the Last Comedian Standing

I don't think it's a bad idea for Palin if she appears on SNL. I think they've skewered every politician since they've been on air. It shows that she can deal with satire. I don't think it will make any difference in the outcome of the election though.
I think it's okay to have a President who can joke and who doesn't take himself too seriously, as long as he takes his duties seriously and knows when it's appropriate to joke and when it's time to be serious. However, I think there are qualities far more important than humor when choosing a President, and Bush is the perfect example of that.
As for election jokes, I haven't really heard any that I can remember. But I've seen plenty of funny election macros at www.punditkitchen.com
the funniest joke i've heard was about putin saying he could see palin's shower from his house or something. they had a special "sarah's in the shower" alarm.
I think Tina Fey lifting an actual quote from Palin's Couric interview was the best "joke" thus far of the campaign. I was absolutely rolling at Obama during the Al Smith dinner, and I loled at McCain during the same dinner, too.
Biden's "8 kitchen tables" snark was a good one as well. Overall, I think that the Republicans have provided the most material to snark at.
McCain displayed humility, honesty, wit and an apology in that simple sentence. Absolutely brilliant.
McCain almost denied his running mate's attacks on Obama about paling around with terrorists, but quickly decided it was best not to bullshit Letterman and the American public. This forced him to defend and explain SarahPalin's accusations. I doubt McCain expected Letterman to bring up G.GordonLiddy but it was awesome to see McCain ad lib a reply.
Palin on SNL will no doubt have a script to follow. It will no doubt be hilarious. But Palin has to defend her party, her views, her annoying nuances. Hopefully she can/will be gracious about it. Hopefully her church life has taught her humility.
