Just got back from a cat-trapping trip with Kevin--he's part of a local cat rescue that feeds and traps ferals, fixes them, and either finds homes (if possible) or releases them. It's mostly the latter these days--as usual, the supply of cats vastly outstrips demand. Since he was trapping in an area that involved fence hopping, it's much easier ( Read more... )

We rescued our cat from one of the animal shelters in the area. I've only had one cat and two dogs in my lifetime, but we've always spayed/neutered. I have a friend who trapped a feral cat and managed to tame him - she mostly fosters cats now. I am definitely of the Bob Barker mentality - we have to spay and neuter these pets because there's just so very many of them without homes. Poor things. :(

While I greatly admire the man's dedication, your descriptions make his heroic endeavors sounds like a lost Monty Python sketch.

Sadly, a lot of heroic endeavors involving animals, when truthfully told, sound like Monty Python sketches. It's one of those things.

There should be a wanring on all your posts to put all food and beverages down and swallow!

explain to the nice officer why the scary bald man with tattoos was crapping in the bushes with a feral cat in one hand

That bit nearly led to the demise of my keyboard, sketch book, and new flat screen monitor; I can only imagine one's laptop would be in graver danger!

And me & my kitties thank you & the scary bald man... ^-^

A friend of mine has a funny story about a research colleague who was trapping birds in a provincial park and had the cops called on him for voyeurism (I guess sneaking around in the bushes with binoculars at the edge of a walking trail seemed shady to someone)- the best part is, when they showed up and called them out of the bushes, he was in the middle of collecting a blood sample, and yelled back "I can't come out yet, I have a bird in my hands and I need to finish!"

You know, on the list of "least favorite things to use as toilet paper", a feral cat ranks right between a porcupine and a rabid skunk. What a visual.
