Just got back from a cat-trapping trip with Kevin--he's part of a local cat rescue that feeds and traps ferals, fixes them, and either finds homes (if possible) or releases them. It's mostly the latter these days--as usual, the supply of cats vastly outstrips demand. Since he was trapping in an area that involved fence hopping, it's much easier ( Read more... )

We're trying to deal with the feral/stray population that's appeared magically in our carriage barn since our last barn raccoon went missing last fall. Mostly, we're trying to catch the stripey tom that's been spraying our barn, our bushes, our front door... and some of his svelte little paramours, who have started their love-yowling lately. Just today, our trap yielded the first cat: a tabby we've never, ever seen before, but who seems to love people. Our vet will be checking her (we think) tomorrow. I hope we don't end up with too big a menagerie from this adventure...

:)

It was kind of fun, coming out on a snowy morning and seeing the little raccoony footprints around our house.

Not so much fun was the vigorous destruction wrought by those little hands on the insulation that used to be on the wall of the barn against the house, where the downstairs bathroom radiator is. Mid-January in Massachusetts apparently inspired some heat-seeking behavior on the part of our barn raccoons.

Don't worry, cats do that too. It was the same risk regardless. (The insulation that used to be in the garage on the ceiling, apparently made a lovely cat hammock.)

As the mommy of two rescued and subsequently neutered cats, let me say that y'a'll are doing the Lord's work. Carry on.

Also, he is currently suffering explosive and unpredictable alimentary ailments, and the fact that he was out checking cat traps in this condition is a testimony to the man's dedication. Still, I felt it prudent to come along, so that in case of emergency, somebody could explain to the nice officer why the scary bald man with tattoos was crapping in the bushes with a feral cat in one hand.

Right. It's metaqouting time

This is Ursula. "Metaquoting time" is like "eastern time"-- she lives there. It is currently 8:05 UMT = Ursula Metaquoting Time.

People who do catch, spay/neuter and release have my support! Well, people who take in former ferals as part of their family, too, of course, but you can only take in so many. I love vets who do the spay/neutering on ferals for free, too.

Yay for both of you!

My cat Bubby was a spay-and-release and had his ear clipped. He's a big nutless marshmallow; I thought he was female for like... 3 months after I took him in.
